It may be just hearsay but I just read on Gizmodo that VLC may be yanking their app out of the app store due to licensing issues.

The app is free so my advice is download it even if you don't think you will use it right away.

Already downloaded. But it is strange that they may have a licensing issue. They have been around for years and I have been using the PC version for a few years already.

What app? The remote?

No, the actual VLC Player that was released for iPhone a few weeks ago.

There's a lot of stress these days about how the GNU license is too restrictive, and how the varied App Store licenses (iOS, Android, Win7, Palm..) are not politically compatible with GNU, so yeah - perfect storm. It's more about the Free Software Foundation using Videolan to push their particular agenda.

Videolan, though, says they're not in danger, it's not going away, and FSF is either "wrong (or FUD)" - nice statement, basically telling the FSF and Gizmodo to not steal their application for any purpose, including political ones.

So no worries, download away and enjoy (AVIs are a treat now!)

if you use icloud now after you have udated itunes then you can get all the old banned apps back but you had best be quick before apple plugs the hole with a patch...which will be over the air of course.

i cant coz i am stuck in the middle of the sea off bloody africa and wont get back to uk for 3weeks so by the time i update itunes and get to use icloud i bet i will be to late :(

i loved vlc and it was not apple that took it down it was one of the original programmers that asked them to take it off because the licence conflicted with apples closed source system.

Yeah, I was wrong about VLC and the license and all. Meh - VLC, while nice, is very kludgy.

I've just switched to BuzzPlayer HD (iTunes link - for the iPad, but there's a iPhone/iPod version too) and it's really much better. 75+ codecs supported and streaming from PCs and Macs, plus you can use AirPlay to stream video to AppleTVs.

Quite nice...

Does the same as vlc did??

Been looking for aggggggggges for another player like vlc and yep your right it could be a bit clunky (great expression by the way i may pinch it for later!) vlc could jump and lag quite a bit but was the best for playing your own non-purchaed video media.

Have you got it now? it best still be there when i get back to uk!!!

Android should outgrow iOS i agree but not for a very long time now. Google will have to step in and release something similar to the iCLOUD as i cant see the phone companies joining together to create anything as good, also Google is probably the only company in the world with enough servers to even come close to what apple will be releasing later this year. I have read about apples data centers they have 3 of them and there huge! i believe the last one they built to be the biggest in world within the public sector thats excluding military and governments data centers.

As good as Android gets it will take something big to match what apple have now created.

I was a huge user of Vlc on my iPad until it got very buggy recently, like no dialogues sounds, only music (which isn't a matter if you watch Wall E, at least the first part.

But I found a lot more better than Vlc for playing videos on the iPad!

It is.... GOODPLAYER, I even want to nickname it GODplayer because it has two features that makes it divine:

You can password protect the app

It can read flash videos. I repeat: it can read FLASH videos, the ones in .flv file format.

Now tell me what you think about that app !

Avoid Pain, Be Free, Have Fun.

Never fails - you ask an iOS-specific question, and there's always someone there to start a platform war. Aren't we all over this now? What a person buys is their personal preference, like their personal religion - there is no absolutely "right" choice.

To get back on topic, I do still recommend Buzz Player HD. I've got tunneling set up so I can stream directly from my NAS anywhere (Apple Extreme with 6tb hanging off it). Its sweet also using the built-in browser and being able to download/unzip and play everything (especially Flash. Not that I want that shit on my device, but it just shuts some people up).
