Baht Bus Cooperative meeting with Pattaya Police Chief

The Pattaya Police Chief called a meeting with senior officials from the Pattaya Baht Bus Cooperative on Wednesday to discuss problems encountered with Baht Buses by members of the public and the Police. Police Colonel Nantawoot, Pattaya’s Police Chief was joined by his two deputies and Khun Tawat, President of the cooperative. The Colonel led the meeting and was told that around 700 Baht Buses operate here in Pattaya. He mentioned that to avoid a reduction in numbers and to prevent persistent traffic congestion problems caused by the high numbers of Baht Buses on the roads of Pattaya at any one time, he wants the cooperative to enforce a scheme which was implemented some years ago whereby Baht Buses were allocated certain routes denoted by colored stickers on their front windows. He also demanded that the Baht Buses use only designated stopping areas and not to create congestion problems by stopping as soon as passengers demanded to be let-off. From 1st September Pattaya’s Traffic Police will be strictly enforcing traffic laws in relation to the Baht Buses and will begin to issue fines to those drivers who continue to park illegally.

Crimes on Baht Buses were also discussed. Necklace snatches and pickpockets are prevalent and the Colonel requires cooperation from Baht Bus drivers to help in reducing these forms of crime. Khun Tawat confirmed that a re-design of the Baht Buses will soon take place to assist in preventing such crimes and he will consult with the Police before the designs are implemented.

Finally, the Colonel stated that he was aware of the problems with unlicensed taxi’s operating in Pattaya and will work closely with the Baht Bus Cooperative to locate and arrest those involved in operating such vehicles.

I wonder how far apart the proposed bus stops will be.

I agree with you Scumbag. Can't see them obeying this rule, because they need to pick up as many passengers as they can to make their business pay.

Now with all the new traffic lights being installed on second road traffic should be a nightmare.

Who else do you think runs them? Why do you think Taxi from Bangkok will never stop to pick up customer in Pattaya no matter how much you are willing to pay.

Ones who have tried were warned and some were badly bashed to prove the point

What they neglected to point out was that should a baht bus be pulled over for a traffic infrigement the passenger (provided he/she is a falang) would be required to pay for the traffic fine.

I wonder what the ticket was for? Not wearing a helmet? or driving too slow and watching the road?LMAO

My take on this----- is a week of hassles and then back to normal. At least I hope so. The BB system is one of the things that makes life in patts convenient and enjoyable. If traffic is the issue, stop those giant tourist buses from beach road.

What... service... may I do you? Hmmm? You know I demand payment.--- I brought payment. Look! BAM!! An undead monkey! Top that!

Be careful what you wish for. :68:

I witnesssed a similar scenario in Patong a few years ago, when the city tried to implement new rules for tuk tuks (even a far worse mafia).

Patong came to a standstill. When the governor tried to explain the reasons for the regulations to the drivers/owners, they attacked him physically and he had to be escorted by police to his office.

Not wishing for it although it would be good for business :GoldenSmile1: But 90%+ of the traffic snarl ups here are due to the baht buses,I've always said they could halve the number of the things and it would help to free up the roads and there would still be enough of them to provide a service.

But we all know that will never happen and why. :NoNo3:

Who is the Thai Mafia ?, many people will tell you but most of them are only relaying stuff they have heard, a bit like many people say they have a friend high up in the Police, they say it for effect.

How about banning tanks (humber like cars/trucks) from Soi Diana & similar narrow Soi's, & also enforcing the one-way traffic rules where applicable?

There was something written a while back along those lines, make Soi Honey one way from Second Road to Soi Buakhow and Soi Diana one way from Soi Buakhow to Second Road.Seemed like a reasonable idea to me ?

The BiB do enforce the one way now and again, usually when I'm the daft bastard breaking the rule !

I witnessed the activities of Phuket’s tuk tuk mafia (and it’s really a mafia-like organization) first hand, while I lived in a village where nearly every family owns a tuk tuk.

Surprisingly this is the only village on Phuket where the “chicken buses” (some sort of public transportation) do not stop on their way to Patong. So everyone without own transportation relies on these overpriced tuk tuks.

As a result of mounting tourist complaints, Phuket’s administration supported the introduction of metered taxis, who were based at the airport.

I saw 2 times when meter taxis dropped customers at our village, immediately a group of locals gathered and started threatening the drivers.

One of the drivers, who lived nearby in wooden shed was found beaten to death a few weeks later. Of course, the official story was a dispute over gambling depts.

As I mentioned earlier, they even attacked Phuket’s governor physically when he tried to introduce new regulations for tuk tuks in Patong.

Don’t get me wrong, personally I had never a problem with these families. They were good neighbors to me and in all the years the took good care of me, my GF and my property. But it’s still a mafia like organsiation and nobody in their right mind would dare to interfere with their business.

I think they could remove about 50% of the baht busses without affecting the service. There are too many of them. All you need to do is stand maybe 500m up Beach Road from Walking Street and see how many of them are empty or near empty. At least every second vehicle on that stretch of the road at night is a baht bus. I do not think the big tourist busses cause as much congestion as the baht busses do.
