Rules for Old Men Waiting; by Peter R. Pouncey

Traded In recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Cafe / Guesthouse, Pattaya..

A brief, lyrical novel with a powerful emotional charge, Rules for Old Men Waiting is about three wars of the twentieth century and an ever-deepening marriage.
In a house on the Cape “older than the Republic,” Robert MacIver, a historian who long ago played rugby for Scotland, creates a list of rules by which to live out his last days.
The most important rule, to “tell a story to its end,” spurs the old Scot on to invent a strange and gripping tale of men in the trenches of the First World War.

Drawn from a depth of knowledge and imagination, MacIver conjures the implacable, clear-sighted artist Private Callum; the private’s nemesis Sergeant Braddis, with his pincerlike nails; Lieutenant Simon Dodds, who takes on Braddis; and Private Charlie Alston, who is ensnared in this story of inhumanity and betrayal but brings it to a close.

This invented tale of the Great War prompts MacIver’s own memories of his role in World War II and of Vietnam, where his son, David served.
Both the stories and the memories alike are lit by the vivid presence of Margaret, his wife.
As Hearts and Minds director Peter Davis writes, “Pouncey has wrought an almost inconceivable amount of beauty from pain, loss, and war, and I think he has been able to do this because every page is imbued with the love story at the heart of his astonishing novel.”

The Unburied by Charles Palliser.

Traded In recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Cafe / Guesthouse, Pattaya..

In Victorian England, Dr. Courtine is invited to spend the days before Christmas with Austin, a friend from his youth, in the Cathedral Close of Thurchester.
Courtine hopes to research an unsolved mystery at the cathedral library, but when Austin captivates him with the story of the town ghost, a macabre tale of murder and deception dating back two centuries, Courtine finds himself drawn instead into a haunting world of avarice, skullduggery, and exceptional evil.
Daring, unpredictable, atmospheric, The Unburied is a dazzling entry in the canon of classic Victorian masterpieces of suspense.

Metamorphosis by Frank Kafka.

Traded In recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Cafe / Guesthouse, Pattaya..

The Metamorphosis is a novel by Franz Kafka, first published in 1915.
It has been called one of the seminal works of fiction of the 20th century and is studied in colleges and universities across the Western world.
The story begins with a traveling salesman, Gregor Samsa, waking to find himself transformed (metamorphosed) into a large, monstrous insect-like creature.
The cause of Gregor's transformation is never revealed, and Kafka himself never gave an explanation.
The rest of Kafka's novel deals with Gregor's attempts to adjust to his new condition as he deals with being burdensome to his parents and sister, who are repelled by the horrible, verminous creature Gregor has become.

This work tells the story behind one of the key figures in the Kray trial.
As a young East End tearaway, Chris Lambrianou was involved in armed robbery, safe blowing, protection rackets and attempted murder.
But it was his younger brother Tony's attraction to the Kray twins that threw Chris into the national spotlight and got him convicted for a murder he did not commit.
One Saturday night, he was lured to a party that ended in the murder of Jack "The Hat" McVitie.
His crime was to help dispose of the body, and by refusing to implicate the Krays, he was jailed for life in 1969.
Reacting with violence to the prison regime, he tried to kill himself, before a vision changed him fundamentally and prompted him to become a Christian.

For Valour by Andy McNab.

Traded In recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Cafe / Guesthouse, Pattaya..

When a young trooper is shot in the head at the Regiment's renowned Killing House, Nick Stone is perfectly qualified to investigate the mysterious circumstances more deeply.
He has just returned from Moscow, still trying to come to terms with the fact that his girlfriend and baby son are safer there without him, so combines an unrivalled understanding of the Special Forces landscape with a detachment that should allow him to remain in cover.

But less than forty eight hours later, a second death catapults him back into the firing line, into the telescopic sights of an unknown assassin bent on protecting a secret that could strike at the heart of the establishment that Stone has, in his maverick fashion, spent most of his life fighting to protect.

And now the clock is ticking, Stone hurtles from the solitude of a remote Welsh confessional to Glencoe, whose shadows still whisper of murder and betrayal, and on to Southern Spain, in an increasingly desperate quest to uncover the truth about a chain of events that began in the darkness of an Afghan hillside, and left a young man haunted by the never ending screams of a friend the Taliban skinned alive.

Nick Stone's most heart stopping adventure yet will force the reader to recognise the thinness of the line that separates sacrifice from suicide, to share the nightmares that walk hand in hand with heroism and to count the real cost of actions taken in the name of loyalty.

Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ
by Daniel Goleman.

Traded In recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Cafe / Guesthouse, Pattaya..

Everyone knows that high IQ is no guarantee of success, happiness, or virtue, but until Emotional Intelligence, we could only guess why.
Daniel Goleman's brilliant report from the frontiers of psychology and neuroscience offers startling new insight into our "two minds" the rational and the emotional and how they together shape our destiny.

Through vivid examples, Goleman delineates the five crucial skills of emotional intelligence, and shows how they determine our success in relationships, work, and even our physical well-being.
What emerges is an entirely new way to talk about being smart.

The best news is that "emotional literacy" is not fixed early in life.
Every parent, every teacher, every business leader, and everyone interested in a more civil society, has a stake in this compelling vision of human possibility.

A Child Called "It" by Dave Pelzer .

Traded In recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Cafe / Guesthouse, Pattaya...

This book chronicles the unforgettable account of one of the most severe child abuse cases in California history.
It is the story of Dave Pelzer, who was brutally beaten and starved by his emotionally unstable, alcoholic mother: a mother who played tortuous, unpredictable games, games that left him nearly dead.
He had to learn how to play his mother's games in order to survive because she no longer considered him a son, but a slave; and no longer a boy, but an "it."
Dave's bed was an old army cot in the basement, and his clothes were torn and raunchy.
When his mother allowed him the luxury of food, it was nothing more than spoiled scraps that even the dogs refused to eat.
The outside world knew nothing of his living nightmare.
He had nothing or no one to turn to, but his dreams kept him alive, dreams of someone taking care of him, loving him and calling him their son.

The Ambassador's Wife by Jake Needham.
Set in Thailand.

Traded In recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Cafe / Guesthouse, Pattaya...

The first body is in Singapore, on a bed in an empty suite in the Marriott hotel.
The second in Bangkok, in a seedy apartment close to the American embassy.

Both women. Both Americans.
Both beaten viciously and shot in the head. Both stripped naked and lewdly displayed.
The FBI says it’s terrorism, but the whispers on the street tell a different story.
A serial killer may be stalking American women all across Asia.

Inspector Samuel Tay of Singapore CID is something of a reluctant policeman, he’s a little overweight, a little lonely, a little cranky, and he smokes way too much.
Thinking back, he can’t even remember why he became a police detective in the first place, he talks about quitting all the time, but he hasn’t because the thing is, he’s very, very good at what he does.

When bodies of American women start turning up, Singapore CID calls in Inspector Tay.
It’s a high profile case, and he’s the best they have.
Then why is it, Tay soon begins to wonder, that nobody seems to want him to find the woman’s killer?
Not the FBI, not the American ambassador, not even his bosses at CID.

When international politics takes over a murder case, the truth is the next victim.
