One day on popping into admin at HMP Elmley there was a letter from a Met police officer requesting a meet with me, I asked to see the Governor and he just confirmed I should meet them.

Arrangements made and I met them at the prison a few days later, basically an inmate on remand was clammed right up and charged with rape and his MO fitted a string of rapes of young girls as well as a young boy, over ten years, there was strong evidence he used the same car, an mark 2 ford fiesta but the police couldn't locate the car, they were sure if they could find it there would be enough forensic evidence in the car to tie him to other rapes thus banging him up for life as a couple of the rape victims were also badly beaten.

We discussed how I may front this, slowly and carefully, the hospital governor said the inmate had asked for methadone as he's a drug user so this may get things going. So, onto the wing and made my way in the vicinity of his cell.

by now I carried with me in my bag a few listener recruitment forms, the ice breakers I called them, I would hand them out and if there was a particular inmate, I wanted to get to know I would start a conversation, this didn’t always work of course but their ears would prick up once I mention perks like my mum’s fruit cake or free tobacco. so started handing out a few as I saw my target.

I already knew one or two on this spur and one I had visited before as he was a historic self-harmer. One of those 'tell me about your childhood ' then felt his pain myself. so was chatting and my target came towards us, I handed him a form, didn’t say anything, he took it but didn’t even look at it.

I quite expected him to screw it up, he had gone along the landing to talk to an officer, then came back, I didn’t say anything or even look at him but the inmate I was talking to had to move out of his way and as he passed whispered to him “free baccy you know" that stopped him in his tracks, shoosh I said, what’s that about my target said.

No, it’s just that when a listener is called out, they offer a smoke to whoever they're called out to and its baccy I give them, just a little if they have to offer their own or if they don’t smoke.

So, what’s with this listener thing then. OK, where’s your cell, I’ll come and explain it... So off we toddled, now the awkward bit is he thinks he’s only here until his court case and he’s hoping there will be insufficient evidence so there’s no point as he'll be free.

So, I am ready to convince him it matters not how long he's here and becoming a listener may well give him brownie points, and ok, we can just have a chat and I can work on his weakness like drugs. So, I explained the listener thing, his body language wasn’t good, he was more interested in me and why I did this? the listener scheme, his ears pricked a bit when I mentioned my 15 year old daughter, I often do that, just drop it in as they are not expecting it and you get a more organic reaction although you don’t overly pay too much attention to their reaction as the clever ones, the guys who have dealt with the professional physiology pros etc. read back your reactions.

Then I had an idea.

I told him I had been teaching her to drive in my little car that I had promised to give her when she passes but being an old car, the big ends had blown and as this was voluntary and I am only on benefits I couldn't afford a new engine. Anyway, I told him I have to fly, if you’re interested in the listener scheme ask an officer to put a note in my pigeon hole in admin, and as I left, I did my magic trick of taking some stuff out of my bag and giving him some tobacco and him seeing some drinking straws and me hurriedly putting them back in my bag, before he had chance to say anything I was gone.

As expected, a note in my pigeon hole from him, up I went, hey he said, I made a few inquiries, I hope you don’t mind but I know Mulligan, we go back a long way and he said you're ‘ok’, what else did he say? no nothing, just that you're ok. So, does that mean you’re going to join the listener, no point I'm out soon, ah ok, we got chatting again as I needed to, he said he knows a good mechanic on the out who is cheap and will let you pay a bit at a time, oh right, great I said, I have 80 quid put aside, how much do you think a new engine?

“What car is it”, he asked,

A mark 2 fiesta, he looked at me, hesitated, I am sure there was a slight smile, a mark 2 fiesta huh, yes actually I love that car as I've had it for 5 years, I have shagged a dozed birds in that car, even the wife. haha... so how about 100 quid for the new engine, he said? I wish I said I have been quoted 300 for a reconditioned one, well he said my man has one, actually he was going to get shot of it...anyway I'll make a call and put you onto him, wow that’s great, by the way it’s not a stolen car is it, ha ha, nah you’re alright.

Really appreciate it I said and here, something for your blocked sinuses. he laughed, he thought I was God knows what, you'll sleep well toning, mums the word and off I went, told the gov how it was going and monitor his calls as they may be interesting.

Two days later back up to see him as I had the word from the governor he had called the guy and arranged the engine, got the mechanics number, he hinted at more powder but I told him cannot today and not too often as I have a couple guys in here who do me favors on the out and I have to be very careful, reminded him I only need to be caught once, but he said guys may threaten to blackmail you for it once they know, yes they may, one did a few months back.

What happened he asked, he committed suicide I told him….

I called the mechanic and arranged to meet him at his little garage set up, the cops had been watching him since our guy had called him to talk about the engine, this guy needed to see my car, I thought you were going to bring it here, can’t I said no engine, now we had been rushing round to find another mark 2 fiesta and took the engine out as I told him I had taken it to a garage who said it was going to cost more to fix it than a re-con engine, so I’ll get it towed here, when can you do it.

No, he said you need to take your car to middle farm at Petworth estate, Sevenoaks, the car is there, I’ll meet you there tomorrow at 1pm, does your car need any more parts as its going to be scrapped after, oh how come, is it a wreck then, how much for sale, no it’s got to be scrapped, never mind well just put the engine in yours and if you need any more part’s they're yours. Now the cops have him on 24-hour watch in case he smells a rat and gets rid.

With the police well-hidden and ready to pounce, they need the evidence of him taking me to the car, then can arrest him and search his garage and house etc. and the phone calls and evidence.

We arrive, the car is well hidden behind bails of straw, what’s that about I said as the Police came noisily in, sure enough it is the car, we are both taken back to the nick, me for effect of course, so far the inmate thinks I was nothing to do with it but another inmate had heard his lawyer was telling him I had a part in all this, turned out an officer had grassed to another inmate and so on, my cover was in jeopardy, can’t happen said the governor, our guy once all the evidence was uncovered from the car and what he'd asked the mechanic to hide and get rid of, he was re-arrested charged with a dozen rapes attempt murder, imprisonment, kidnap etc. he apparently committed suicide ...

Pattaya Memorial Hospital Absolutely disgraceful service, waited 90 mins, freezing, i'm in a wheelchair, not once anyone asked if I would like a blanket as I had mentioned how cold it was in there, by 90 mins I could hardly speak because of the cold and was coughing, asked again if there was a doctor? ignored, so I left.
