Killing Season by Faye Kellerman...

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange - Guesthouse - Cafe - Pattaya.

Faye Kellerman delivers an electrifying novel of suspense as a young man’s investigation into his sister’s death draws him into the path of a sadistic serial killer.

He went searching for the truth.
Now a killer has found him.

The more you know, the more there is to fear…

Four years ago, fifteen year old Ellen Vicksburg went missing in the quiet town of River Remez, New Mexico.
Ellen was kind, studious, and universally liked.
Her younger brother, Ben, could imagine nothing worse than never knowing what happened to her, until, on the first anniversary of her death, he found her body in a shallow grave by the river’s edge.

How to Plan a Crusade: Reason and Religious War in the High Middle Ages by Christopher Tyerman

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange - Cafe - Guesthouse - #Pattaya

'Wonderfully written and characteristically brilliant' Peter Frankopan, author of The Silk Roads

'Tyerman's book is fascinating not just for what it has to tell us about the Crusades, but for the mirror it holds up to today's religious extremism' - Tom Holland, Spectator

Thousands left their homelands in the Middle Ages to fight wars abroad.
But how did the Crusades actually happen?
From recruitment propaganda to raising money, ships to siege engines, medicine to the power of prayer, this vivid, surprising history shows holy war - and medieval society - in a new light.

Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann..

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange - Cafe - Guesthouse - #Pattaya......

In the dawning light of a late-summer morning, the people of lower Manhattan stand hushed, staring up in disbelief at the Twin Towers.
It is August 1974, and a mysterious tightrope walker is running, dancing, leaping between the towers, suspended a quarter mile above the ground.
In the streets below, a slew of ordinary lives become extraordinary in bestselling novelist Colum McCann’s stunningly intricate portrait of a city and its people.

Let the Great World Spin is the critically acclaimed author’s most ambitious novel yet: a dazzlingly rich vision of the pain, loveliness, mystery, and promise of New York City in the 1970's.

Killers of the King: The Men Who Dared to Execute Charles I
by Charles Spencer.....

Traded in @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange - Cafe - Guesthouse - #Pattaya

On August 18, 1648, with no relief from the siege in sight, the royalist garrison holding Colchester Castle surrendered and Oliver Cromwell’s army firmly ended the rule of Charles I of England.
To send a clear message to the fallen monarch, the rebels executed four of the senior officers captured at the castle.
Yet still, the king refused to accept he had lost the war.
As France and other allies mobilized in support of Charles, a tribunal was hastily gathered and a death sentence was passed.
On January 30, 1649, the King of England was executed.
This is the account of the fifty nine regicides, the men who signed Charles I’s death warrant.
Recounting a little known corner of British history, Charles Spencer explores what happened when the Restoration arrived.

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange - Cafe - Guesthouse - #Pattaya

EVERY DAY THE SAME
Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night.
Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She's even started to feel like she knows them.
Jess and Jason, she calls them.
Their life, as she sees it, is perfect.
Not unlike the life she recently lost.

UNTIL TODAY
And then she sees something shocking.
It's only a minute until the train moves on, but it's enough.
Now everything's changed.
Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel goes to the police, but is she really as unreliable as they say?
Soon she is deeply entangled not only in the investigation but in the lives of everyone involved, has she done more harm than good?

An account of war in our time, both as historical document and as an eyewitness testament to human savagery.
This book combines political analysis and war reporting: it is an account of the Lebanon conflict by an author who has personally witnessed the carnage of Beirut for over a decade.

Why the West has Won by Victor Davis Hanson.....

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange - Guesthouse - Cafe - Pattaya.

This is a brilliant history of the rise to dominance of the West, exploring the links between cultural values and military success.
Instead of weighing up the West through its cultural and literary accomplishments, Hanson engages with the much starker record of the Western battlefield.
In place of The Great Books, he studies The Great Battles, and offers graphic representations of nine representative clashes between West and non West.
Hanson writes uncommonly well about battle, and has an uncanny ability to evoke the chaos and terror of warfare, so crystallising his argument into records of a few hours of intense combat.

All Too Human by George Stephanopoulos

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange - Cafe - Guesthouse - #Pattaya

All Too Human is a new generation political memoir, written from the refreshing perspective of one who got his hands on the levers of awesome power at an early age.
At thirty, the author was at Bill Clinton's side during the presidential campaign of 1992, & for the next five years he was rarely more than a step away from the president & his other advisers at every important moment of the first term. What Liar's Poker did to Wall Street, this book will do to politics.
It is an irreverent & intimate portrait of how the nation's weighty business is conducted by people whose egos & idiosyncrasies are no sturdier than anyone else's.

No More Tomorrows: The Compelling True Story of an Innocent Woman Sentenced to Twenty Years in a Hellhole Bali Prison by Schapelle Corby & Kathryn Bonella.

Traded in recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange / Guesthouse / Cafe, Pattaya...

It was meant to be a two week vacation to celebrate her sister’s birthday, but for Schapelle Corby it ended up a waking nightmare.
Arrested at Denpasar airport after marijuana was found in her luggage, she became the victim of every traveler’s darkest fear.
More than four kilograms of drugs had been planted in her bag after she’d checked it in, and she was forced to face the consequences of someone else's crime in a country where the penalties for drug smuggling are among the harshest in the world.
Her trial and conviction became one of the biggest news stories of the decade and her family watched in horror as she was sentenced to 20 years in jail.
Yet despite the huge media coverage, the one voice the public never properly heard was Schapelle’s.
Now, in this compelling book, she tells her own story: of being wrenched from a carefree holiday and incarcerated in a stinking police cell and of learning to survive in the squalor, discomfort, and violence of an Indonesian jail.

The Lost Heart of Asia by Colin Thubron.

Traded in recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Guesthouse / Cafe, Pattaya.

A land of enormous proportions, countless Secrets, and incredible history, Central Asia, the heart of the great Mongol empire of Tamerlane, site of the legendary Silk Route and scene of Stalin's cruelest deportations, is a remote and fascinating region.
Since the collapse of the Soviet Union and the emergence of newly independent republics, Central Asia, containing the magical cities of Bukhara and Samarkand, and terrain as diverse as the Kazakh steppes, the Karakum desert, and the Pamir mountains, has been in a constant state of transition. The Lost Heart of Asia takes readers into the very heart of this little visited, yet increasingly important region, delivering a rare and moving portrayal of a world in the midst of change.

Bindon by Wensley Clarkson.

In the True Crime section @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Cafe / Guesthouse / Pattaya, Thailand...

John Bindon emerged from a poor, working class London childhood and turned his back on crime to play major parts in films.
A fine screen presence and a powerful figure in London's underworld, his film star looks, charm, and talent brought him worldwide exposure.
Usually typecast in tough guy roles, his on screen persona was chillingly close to his read life.
Big John's nickname came from his status as a legendary sexual performer, so it was no surprise that his encounters with stunning women, most famously Princess Margaret, led to numerous high-profile relationships.
But most of all, Big John was a warm hearted, complex man, utterly devoted to those who have him respect and always prepared to be the last line of defense to those closest to him.

Asian Godfathers: Money and Power in Hong Kong and South-East Asia by Joe Studwell...

Traded In recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Cafe / Guesthouse / Pattaya, Thailand...

The economies of Hong Kong and south-east Asia are dominated by only forty or fifty families. Their interests range from banking to property, from shipping to sugar, from gambling to lumber.
At their peak, eight of the world's two dozen richest families were south-east Asian, yet they are largely unknown outside the region.
A complex mythology surrounds them, one which informs Asian views on culture, entrepreneurialism and economics.
In this explosive account, Joe Studwell finds that the facts are even more remarkable than the myths, as he lifts the lid on a world of hypocrisy, power and enormous wealth.

When Edinburgh police find the killer of a prominent city elder less than twenty four hours after the crime, they are justifiably pleased.
So the murderer has killed himself; that just saves the time and cost of a trial.
But a second murder days later bears haunting similarities to the first, even though once more the murderer swiftly confesses and kills himself.
