The Rainbow by D. H. Lawrence..

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange..

A controversial classic from D.H. Lawrence, the author of Lady Chatterley's Lover. Lush with religious and metaphysical imagery, this is the story of three generations of the Brangwen family, set against the decline of their rural English existence in the face of industrialization.

The novel also treats the most taboo subject of its time, peering intimately into a family’s sexual mores, exposing the dynamics of marriage and physical love as a sexual tug-of-war that is both formidable and inescapable. Visionary and prophetic, The Rainbow was banned in England after its publication in 1915 and was long available in the U.S. only in an expurgated edition.

The Intruders by Stephen Coonts..

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange..

1973.

The skies over Vietnam have finally gone silent.

America has pulled out, the war is over. But for Lieutenant Jake Grafton, USN, fresh from two combat cruises and a harrowing shoot-down over Laos, the personal battle is just beginning....

His country has not welcomed him home with open arms, but with closed minds and closed fists.

When his girlfriend's father called him a murderer, Jake walked away. But when a stranger in a bar challenged his honor, the man was not so lucky - the guy landed in the hospital, Jake landed in jail and Grafton's shore-duty commander, who bailed him out, has devised the perfect punishment for his ace flight instructor: an eight-month cruise on the aircraft carrier Columbia teaching jarheads - Marines - the nuances of carrier aviation.

Flying missions over Vietnam was a living hell; now, as a Navy man working side by side with Marines who have no carrier aviation experience, Grafton's about to discover another world of fresh hell.

The Marines may be made of tempered steel and brass balls, but taking off and landing from a slippery flight deck, on a choppy sea in a pitch-black night, there is no margin for error - or for animosity.

And men like Marine Captain Flap Le Beau, his bombardier and navigator, have a real gift for pushing Jake's buttons. But he's going to have to learn to live with him...or die trying.

They belong to the same society of warriors, they fought in the same war, they drink the same whiskey to toast fallen comrades.

Now they must fly together in the same cockpit, must lock into each other and into their million-dollar machine, and make the split-second decisions which will insure that, tonight, their fellow pilots won't raise a glass to them.

Arabia by Jonathan Raban

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange.

ARABIA is the story of Jonathan Raban's magic carpet ride through Bahrain, Qatar, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Yemen, Egypt and Jordan.

Not only does it reveal the Arabs and their culture, it also introduces us to a series of memorable individuals. Much of the book's strength is the author's gift for friendships.

He brings us into markets and hotels to glamorous parties and seedy rooms, to a sheikh's fortress and the home of a Bedu family.

He opens up the world of the rich and the poor and gives us the feel, the smells, the sounds, the very texture of Arabia. "Beautifully written, poignant, funny, ARABIA is more than travel book, it is a tale of the collision of cultures, observed at an historically crucial time."

Juno Beach: Canada's D-Day Victory, June 6, 1944 by Mark Zuehlke. .

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange.

On June 6, 1944, the greatest armada in history stood off Normandy and the largest amphibious invasion ever began as 107,000 men aboard 6,000 ships pressed toward the coast.

Among them were 14,500 Canadians, who were to land on a five-mile-long stretch of rocky ledges fronted by a dangerously exposed beach. Drawing on personal diaries as well as military records, Juno Beach: Canada's D-Day Victory - June 6, 1944 dramatically depicts Canada's pivotal contribution to the critical Allied battle of World War II.

Cromwell by Antonia Fraser. . .

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange..

In Cromwell, award-winning biographer Antonia Fraser tells of one of England's most celebrated and controversial figures, often misunderstood and demonized as a puritanical zealot.

Oliver Cromwell rose from humble beginnings to spearhead the rebellion against King Charles I, who was beheaded in 1649, and led his soldiers into the last battle against the Royalists and King Charles II at Worcester, ending the civil war in 1651.

Fraser shows how England's prestige and prosperity grew under Cromwell, reversing the decline it had suffered since Queen Elizabeth I's death.

The Lost Cyclist by David V. Herlihy. .

This book UK was 12.99 - our price 140 baht plus 50% trade in for credit when finished with it @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange.

In the late 1880s, Frank Lenz of Pittsburgh, a renowned high-wheel racer and long-distance tourist, dreamed of cycling around the world.

He finally got his chance by recasting himself as a champion of the downsized safety-bicycle with inflatable tires, the forerunner of the modern road bike that was about to become wildly popular.

In the spring of 1892 he quit his accounting job and gamely set out west to cover twenty thousand miles over three continents as a correspondent for Outing magazine.

Two years later, after having survived countless near disasters and unimaginable hardships, he approached Europe for the final leg.

He never made it.

His mysterious disappearance in eastern Turkey sparked an international outcry and compelled Outing to send William Sachtleben, another larger-than-life cyclist, on Lenz trail.

Bringing to light a wealth of information, Herlihy gripping narrative captures the soaring joys and constant dangers accompanying the bicycle adventurer in the days before paved roads and automobiles.

This untold story culminates with Sachtleben heroic effort to bring Lenz accused murderers to justice, even as troubled Turkey teetered on the edge of collapse.

The Price of Glory: Verdun 1916 by Alistair Horne. .

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange..

The Price of Glory: Verdun 1916 is the second book of Alistair Horne's trilogy, which includes The Fall of Paris and To Lose a Battle and tells the story of the great crises of the rivalry between France and Germany. The battle of Verdun lasted ten months. It was a battle in which at least 700,000 men fell, along a front of fifteen miles.

Its aim was less to defeat the enemy than bleed him to death and a battleground whose once fertile terrain is even now a haunted wilderness. Alistair Horne's classic work, continuously in print for over fifty years, is a profoundly moving, sympathetic study of the battle and the men who fought there.

It shows that Verdun is a key to understanding the First World War to the minds of those who waged it, the traditions that bound them and the world that gave them the opportunity.

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. .

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange..

In this celebrated work, his only novel, Wilde forged a devastating portrait of the effects of evil and debauchery on a young aesthete in late 19th century England.

Combining elements of the Gothic horror novel and decadent French fiction, the book centers on a striking premise: As Dorian Gray sinks into a life of crime and gross sensuality, his body retains perfect youth and vigor while his recently painted portrait grows day by day into a hideous record of evil, which he must keep hidden from the world.

For over a century, this mesmerizing tale of horror and suspense has enjoyed wide popularity.

It ranks as one of Wilde's most important creations and among the classic achievements of its kind.

Alma Cogan by Gordon Burn

Traded in recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Cafe / Guesthouse..

How does it feel to be never allowed to die?

In his classic debut novel, Gordon Burn takes Britain's biggest selling vocalist of the 1950's and turns her story into an equation of celebrity and murder.

Fictional characters jostle for space with real life stars - from John Lennon to Doris Day and Sammy Davis Jnr - as Burn, in a breathtaking act of appropriation, reinvents the popular culture of the post-war years.

As beautifully written as it is disturbing, Alma Cogan remains a stingingly relevant exploration of the sad, dark underside of fame.

The Holy Terrors by Jean Cocteau,

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange

Les Enfants Terribles holds an undisputed place among the classics of modern fiction.

Written in a French style that long defied successful translation - Cocteau was always a poet no matter what he was writing - the book came into its own for English-language readers in 1955 when the present version was completed by Rosamond Lehmann.

It is a masterpiece of the art of translation of which the Times Literary Supplement said: "It has the rare merit of reading as though it were an English original." Miss Lehmann was able to capture the essence of Cocteau's strange, necromantic imagination and to bring fully to life in English his story of a brother and sister, orphaned in adolescence, who build themselves a private world out of one shared room and their own unbridled fantasies.

What started in games and laughter became for Paul and Elisabeth a drug too magical to resist. The crime which finally destroyed them has the inevitability of Greek tragedy.

Last Tsar by Larissa Yermilova. .

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange..

This is a major pictorial work about the Romanov dynasty, the supreme rulers of Russia for over 300 years, with special emphasis on the life of Nicholas II, the last Tsar. Moreover, it is an unsurpassed photographic record of the lives of the last reigning members of the Russian Royal family.

The great majority of the photographs used in this book have never been published before, and have rarely been seen even by researchers from the West, having remained hidden in the archives for 70 years, since the Russian revolution.

The many contemporary photographs depict Russian royalty in ceremonial dress and at leisure in informal surroundings.

There are also such unique items as Rasputin, (the mad monk) and confidant of the Tsarina, Alexandra, pictured surrounded by female admirers.

God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything by Christopher Hitchens . . .

Traded in recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Cafe / Guesthouse..

God Is Not Great is the ultimate case against religion.

In a series of acute readings of the major religious texts, Christopher Hitchens demonstrates the ways in which religion is man-made, dangerously sexually repressive and distorts the very origins of the cosmos.

Above all, Hitchens argues that the concept of an omniscient God has profoundly damaged humanity, and proposes that the world might be a great deal better off without 'him'.

An Instance of the Fingerpost by Iain Pears

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange..

An ingenious tour de force: an utterly compelling historical mystery with a plot that twists and turns and keeps the reader guessing until the very last page. We are in England in the 1660's.

Charles II has been restored to the throne following years of civil war and Cromwell's short-lived republic.

Oxford is the intellectual seat of the country, a place of great scientific, religious, and political ferment.

A fellow of New College is found dead in suspicious circumstances.

A young woman is accused of his murder - we hear the story of the death from four witnesses: an Italian physician intent on claiming credit for the invention of blood transfusion; the son of an alleged Royalist traitor; a master cryptographer who has worked for both Cromwell and the king; and a renowned Oxford antiquarian.

Each tells his own version of what happened. Only one reveals the extraordinary truth. With rights sold for record-breaking sums around the world, An Instance of the Fingerpost is destined to become a major international publishing event.

Deserving of comparison to the works of John Fowles and Umberto Eco, Iain Pears novel is an ingenious tour de force: an utterly compelling historical mystery with a plot that twists and turns and keeps the reader guessing until the very last page.
