Just because you specialise in one liners doesn't mean some of us don't put more information further down the post where you apparently don't go.

Don't mind him. About 3% of the time he posts interesting and enjoyable material. :P

I know. If only there was a filter so that I didn't have to read the rest of it. :Oops1:

New, New Improved, New Formula, whatever - still looks and tastes the same same - sour.

sorry for the late reply been out of the loop .. prices look comparable to the uk , still for the i5 processor plus intel mb DP55WB plus maybe 4gb memory your looking at around £350, you can quite comfortably match the i5 performance with a cheaper x4 phenom for just over £200.

(example http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AMD-Phenom-II-X4-945-4GB-DDR2-ASRock-N68C-S-M-ASR-/280523455375?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Motherboards_CPUs&hash=item4150803b8f#ht_3467wt_1069)

im about to build a system using a similar setup for a webserver .. the amd x4 945 uses only 95watts power so wont complain about being installed in a small 350watt rackmount case! this quad core beauty will outperform some seriously expensive dell poweredge server kit for £200!!!!

O you who turn the wheel and look to windward, Consider Phlebas, who was once handsome and tall as you.

Not sure if this is still "live" and you would like advice Edge, if so just bump the thread again.

Thankfully it looked like there were 1-2 who were actually providing good advice and others were just skimming the posts (and saying add more software on a bloated system) or thread crapping. To keep what you have you want to get it fully updated and then off the net (just use the lappy for this) gut all non-essential software (including security) and minimise the amount of processes running on the system, but it is still going to be slow due to age. Don't keep adding more software as this is just compounding the problem. The only software I consider is what programs are you using for the Video Work?

Firstly it seems your primary purpose is Video transcoding/editing etc, these tasks can smash most machines and bring them to there knees if the person doesn't know "how to set them up properly" in the first place. I know people who have the first gen I7 with 8GB of RAM but a crappy Video Card, HDD in RAID_1 and the thing runs like a 3 legged dog with a bad case of worms dragging it's arse along the ground.

When doing Video work there is a lot of activity to the HDD's (reading from and writing to) and you want a RAID_0 set up with at least 2 x SATA2 HDD's, they can be backed upto a slave at a later time.

Many Videophiles will suggest an AMD build for transcoding/editing purposes (I can't confirm or deny this) with a reasonable Video Card (256 Memory bandwidth) to share the "processing" workload, at least 4GB of RAM and the 2 X HDD mentioned above.

If it is still live, bump the thread and provide some PC Suppliers links and we can work towards a build.

Thanks for the interest.

I set out to upgrade the Desktop, but wound up with a new build.

It isn't top spec', but then neither am I.

I'll dig out the list and post it later (on the lappy now) but I did skimp on RAM - only 4 Gb but the main board can take 16 Gb - so I'm hitting the limits now.

It has 2 x 2 Gb sticks, so, without ditching those, I could add another 2 x 4 Gb.

I forget where I'm at with graphics so I'll post it all later.

Thanks.
