What a load of crap, damn government, it's all about Big Brother control. 2 years ago I had my laptop taken away and searched coming into Perth airport. They brought it back to me about 5 minutes later and said that's OK, but how could they possibly have a look in every folder (on 2 drives) in 5 minutes? So obviously they have a high speed copy machine and copied my HDs. Great, all my security was compromised, I had to change all my log ins and serial numbers and bankcard codes, every bloody thing - Thank you very much for that. Of course if someone did have any evil kiddy porn they wouldn't just have it sitting there on their HDD. They'd have it on an SD card in their ass. So this is all just Big Brother bully bullshit.

 

PS: Have you noticed how much heavier Australian Customs have become since Rudd got in? During the Howard years I flew to Perth annually and the customs wre always friendly and asked me for tips on good spots to go for holidays, now they treat me like a fucking enemy. They seem pissed off when they find nothing.

I agree. Perth airport is crap (takes forever to get through with all bags having to be x-rayed or searched)and the customs guys treat everyone as if your a drug smuggler or terrorist.

my mates laptop got searched for 2 hrs at melbourne airport in january this year after returning from LOS. they were googling pornstars names to find out there ages to make sure they werent underage. ......

The harddrive's own interface simply isn't fast enough to copy all your data in 5mins. You think they pulled the HDDs out the laptop/caddy to plug into these 'high speed copy machines' in the 5mins as well? There are stand alone HDD duplication machines out there but they only work as fast as the HDD, which wouldn't allow you to pull the drive out of the laptop and do a full copy in 5mins

 

They probably had a quick look in My Documents and that's it.

Had my laptop with me a month ago there. Left it out in the open, and a few times left girls in the room when I left. I would come back and always find my LT to be out of my room, and not only would I find my laptop still there, but they were also nice enough to put the service room card on my door knob and would come back to a nicely clean room. Maybe I just know how to pick them. When i come back, I think I wont be so accepting towards leaving it out. It only takes one time for one to take it, so I'll have to find a way to hide it. Wish those security safes were big enough for my laptop.

I hope you're right. But if this is the case then what a ridiculous waste of time a search is. Only an idiot would keep porn or any illegal files in My Documents, the first place someone would have a look. If I did have any porn on my laptop while traveling and going through customs I'd keep it in a hidden folder with a very misleading name, also use one of those folder locking software. But even better would be an SD card, easy to keep in some safe place.

I second that. I have been using truecrypt for many years to store everything including porn, credit card scans, travelers cheques scans, passport scans ...etc). Largest encrypted volume I created was 350 gb encrypted using triple encryption, and performance is excellent. Videos play seamlessly from the encrypted folder.

With truecrypt I think there is the option to setup a secure file that will not be visible when the file is not mounted. I suspect that a thorough search will find the file but a quick look is not going to find it.

I always travel with mine, like the other comments, I left it out and never had a problem. As for porn, hey you're in Pattaya, who needs porn. That's something I turn to when there isn't an alternative, which are in abundance in LOS.

 

Shame for you Aussies, thought that the moral prudes were bad here in the USA but they don't ever look at my electronics when I return. They did go through my bags on the outbound, but that was because I forgot to remove the batteries from the vibrator and they needed to make sure it wasn't something else.

In over 7 years, never had 1 pleasant dealing with them. One example is "your occupation", well i do not live inn Australia so it is irrelevant-well no it is not, they just have to know. No that its a big issue but for the principle once i pushed it all the way to Feds being called, as i refuse to put down my occupation(its none of their business)
