Feel free to try it out but theres quite a few phrases which are out of date in this list in the way people would say things. But I wouldnt worry about it too much if your just looking to use a few phrases on your holiday as Thais will just laugh it off. Good luck

There are inconsistencies with the transliteration in this list. I see that the Bp sound is written as a B in some cases and P in others. Although there are many different ways to transliterate, it should be the same in one list. There should also be an explanation of the transliteration method used.

The Ph sound appears 2ce here. It is not the same as the Ph in Photograph, it is pronounced as a normal P

ga-ru-nah means please. You will rarely here a Thai say please and certainly not use this word in normal conversation. ga-ru-nah usually only appears on signs or in announcements and normally to soften an order, such as No smoking please. In conversation Krup, noi, dooay etc are used to make a sentence more polite instead of the actual word for please. In the example sentence above, noi is used after chah-chah and is enough (maybe add a final krup)

Unless you learn the tones, you will get confused with this word. Glai with a mid tone means far, but with a falling tone means near.

This probably won't be amusing to anyone but me, but on my first trip to Thailand, I spoke very limited Thai. I took a TG to Koh Samet and one of the days as soon as we settled in beach chairs, she said she was hungry and scampered off down the beach to find some food. She returned a little later with a baggie of hard-boiled eggs. "Kai!" she announced with a smile. At the time I didn't know the word ไข่ (kai) yet, but I did know ไก่ (gai). I thought she was trying to tell the stupid farang that they were chicken embryos in case I didn't know what they were!

 

To the original poster, the phrasebook you found is a pretty good basic one. You might try to find a cheap one that has both transliteration and Thai script, though. That way, if (when) your pronunciation from the transliteration isn't understood, you can point to the the Thai script to show what you're trying to say. I love the Thai language, but it can sure be hard for westerners to pronounce understandably -- both because of the tones and because there are some phonemes in Thai that don't exist in any western language.
