Baht at 21-month high

The baht gained 0.2 percent at Bt32.38 per U.S. dollar early Wednesday, the highest in the past 21 months.

The Thai stocks index rose on higher holdings of local assets by foreign investors amid easing of concerns over the current political situation.

Is it just me, who don't understand: how is this possible?

- Red shirts rally this week, creating political havoc.

- Thailand today reported drought worsens, farmers might be hit badly.

Still the Thai Baht get stronger against most other currencies ?

This is one reason being an Aussie is great especially if you travel to Thailand frequently. The AUD to THB is about 29.5

Is this the only reason? :FunnyPost1:

Most European and US currencies will be weak for a while yet. Their economies are not doing as well as the Thai economy and so the THB will be strong and will stay so unfortunately.

The good news is that the Australian dollar is strong so they are getting a good deal in Thailand.

Business worried about strong baht

Published: 18/03/2010 at 03:16 PM

The private sector was concerned about the strengthening of the baht's value as it could hurt trade negotiations and exports from the second quarter of the year onward, Commerce Minister Porntiva Nakasai said.

“The private sector wants the government to closely oversee the baht’s movement to ensure that its will not be too much fluctuation or too strong. The strong baht will affect the country’s trade competitiveness,” Mrs Porntiva said on Thursday

The baht is getting stronger against the $ which does not help the £. Could this be

because of all the money Thaksin is sending over to pay the red shirts ?

Many Asian economies have been thriving in recent years and the Thai economy is strong as it does not suffer from the same restrictions and handicaps Western economies have to contend with.

ALL Asian economies lost ground in recent year or so, some even crashed while Thailand did not show any signs at all in currency anyway.

Question raised by OP is even in the current days when Bangkok is covered with blood from 100 000 plus farmers, total chaos and endless speculations of violence, 1000 hotel rooms canceled daily, during this time baht gets stronger, but not only stronger,in this current moment of chaos it is at 21 months high

Well not quite that bad, but bad; 10% down since my trip last xmas = £300 loss. :Drunk:

I'm staying for a month this time. Just means no ringing the bell, a few more cosy nights in with the GF & NO TIPPING!

15 000B less injected into the Thai economy = same number of BJs / boom boom for me.

Result:

El Cata: 100

Thailand: fucked.

When will they ever learn? :Hug1:

Peace. :GoldenSmile1:

Well not quite that bad, but bad;

If you go back to 2005 it's actually 55% down as it stands at the moment. If it drops to 45 it will be 63% lower than it was in 2005.

Glad i'm not going back for a few years.

I can't understand what's going on as i was in Pattaya last December for a month and the baht was sometimes 50 baht to the euro and in less than 3 months its now 43 baht to the euro. With all the trouble in Thailand at the moment with the government and the red shirts it should be the other way around!!!!

And that was my Question - with all the current problems, the Baht should be weak against all other currencies. Still it goign on strong. They must be doing something right (wrong), but I sure not understand it.

Thai business people have warned the Central Bank that they loose revenue. And tourist numbers has been down for a long time. Still no action from the Central Bank.

I have noticed that the dollar, pound and euro all seem to move together. All have lost a great deal in recent months. It also seems that when one gains, all gain.

I should have transferred my €100,000 at 51 baht last Nov/dec to my bank in Pattaya from Ireland.. I would have made €18,600 richer now at 43 bahts if I had them transferred back to Ireland... Wishful thinking. :22:
