Drunk Pattaya Taxi Driver Threatens the Public with Revolver

An intoxicated taxi driver has been arrested for a series of weapons related charges after threatening to shoot a Thai man outside the Tamnan I-San Pub & Restaurant, North Pattaya.

 

Pattaya, the 5th of January 2010 [PDN]: At approximately 3:00am on Tuesday, police Lieutenant Colonel Suphat Phuikaew (Pattaya Police Investigator) received a report stating that a taxi driver was holding a man at gun point outside the Tamnan I-San Pub & Restaurant, Soi Pechtrakoon, North Pattaya. A team of police rushed to the scene to investigate.

 

When officers arrived at the scene they witnessed the unknown taxi driver pointing a revolver at another Thai man, in between the pair was a women who police suspected was the girlfriend or wife of the victim. When the gunman spotted police he gave up immediately, allowing police to arrest him without using force, removing the gun from his possession.

 

Further investigation revealed that the gun was a .38mm 6 shot revolver and that the taxi driver Mr. Apidach Ruengsak [33] from Nakhon Ratchasima was severely intoxicated. Mr. Ruengsak was subsequently arrested and put in the back of the squad car whilst the police obtained statements from the two victims.

 

Officers interrogated the two victims, Mr. Yongyut Porngphai [26] and his wife Mrs. Patcharin Porngphai [23] from Ubon Ratchathani. They informed police that prior to the incident they had been walking to the Tamnan I-San Pub & Restaurant for some food when they spotted the drunken taxi driver. Mr. Porngphai stated that he had merely looked at Mr. Ruengsak who then angrily asked “why are you looking at my face?” to which Mr. Porngphai replied, “why not?” At which point the intoxicated Mr. Ruengsak pulled the gun out and pointed it at Mr. Porngphai. Mrs. Porngphai explained that she then stood in between the two men in order to defuse the situation, at which point the police arrived at the scene.

 

Lt. Col. Phuikaew revealed to reporters that Mr. Ruengsak will be charged with illegal firearm possession and possession of a firearm in a public place without reason. It was explained to the victims that if they wished to press further charges against Mr. Ruengsak they were entitled to do so. The police subsequently took Mr. Ruengsak to the station where he will now remain pending further judicial proceedings.
