Beginners guide to reading Thai

Recommended Posts

I am not sure if this site has been posted before, but I think it is a really good help to anyone that is starting out learning how to read and write Thai script.

It has 25 lessons which shows you the Thai script letters that are mostly used and the ones that are rarely used, so they are not important to learn, also if they are low, mid or high and also the starting and ending letter, as well as vowels and other things.

I guarantee that any new learner of the Thai script will learn a lot from reading through the 25 lessons.

Thanks for posting that. There's a fairly short supply of good sources for learning to read Thai IMO.

Actually learning to read basic Thai is really very easy, I mastered the Thai alphabet in about a fortnight and from then on I could read Thai. If this sounds unrealistic to any of you just bear in mind that there are roughly 40 consonants and 27 vowels, so that makes less than 70 characters that you have to commit to memory. It took me about 2 weeks to remember them all and their associated sounds. Bingo! I could read. I can't really read Thai newspapers cause I don't have all that vocabulary, but I sure can read menus and street signs and most things around me, including notes from Thai gals. So the best advice I could give to anyone serious about learning the Thai language is also have a crack at the alphabet.

Cheers for that, I am trying to learn thai myself. Learning to read thai script is another bonus and although my learning curve is on the slow side, I hope one day I'll be able to have enough to be able to understand someone.

How long do you think it will take a person who has already learned Korean, Turkish and Japanese to learn Thai? Their first language is English, by the way.

In addition to the lessons, the writings of this bloke on all things Thai are some of the best I have read and should be obligatory reading for anyone considering moving to the Big Mango. Very insightful indeed.

kamsap!

I like reading Thai at night. That way I know I'll have the weirdest fucking dreams while working for a living in falangland.

I can read okay, now working on fluidity. I just keep at it.

Smart to not let on how much you know to the TGs, they switch to Khmer.

Understanding and speaking Thai takes time and if you get stumped, head to Laos, like Louang Prabang.

Two 500b baht rides I did get smoked on each ride by a different hottie....not a handsum

man, but I did massage their shoulders and feet, works like a charm.

They felt "they wanted to reciprocate."

You get to Laos and it is like S-L-O-W Thai.

Have at it.....

Laos is incredible, imho....

ALL girls like it in the Ass. Not all know it....yet!
