Arowana Fishing

Does anyone know where I can go fishing for Arowana in Pattaya?

Arowana is not a typical gamefish! :001_Thank_You5:

Asian Arowana (Sceleropages formosus) is an aquariumfish popular with wealthy chinese that keep them as a symbol of wealth and good luck!

You sometimes see them kept in way too small tanks in chinese restaurants or goldshops!

They kan be very pricy dependent on their colour, the more golden or reddish varieties can cost several 100000 bahts or more to buy!

I've seen Aros sold for 500000 baht in Chatuchark Weekend market in Bangkok!

In nature they are now very rare and are an endangered species put up on the CITES red list!

In Thailand they are more or less extinct in nature now because of overcatching.

Sumatra and Borneo are famous for it's golden or red Arowana's.

Although they are bred successfully in farms nowadays there are still many restrictions on import/export of these fish.

If you wanna go "fishing" for these fish you'll need a big wallet! :)

The only reason I am asking is because I am a Arowana fanatic myself. I have found guides in other parts of thailand but none in Pattaya. Although, I have seen ads that say arowana and arapaima but they only show pics of arapaimas. Do you know of any other specific places that I can actually see an asian arowana that is for sale? thanks for the info. cheers

If you wanna buy them, most bigger aquariumshops will keep a few of them for sale, count on 5000-10000 baht up for a smaller specimen.

There are a quite a few specialist shops in the mentioned Chatuchark Weekend Market in Bangkok, where you should be able to find some good quality Aros!

Easy to make a daytrip to BKK from Pattaya or better stay for the weekend.

In Pattaya there are a few shops in Nahkleua that sales bigger fish including Arowanas, there is a smaller shop on the same side as the Pattaya Northern Busstation a few blocks up that might have some smaller Aros, and there is another small Aquariumshop on Pattaya Klang that might have them.

If you see them kept by thai/chinese in shops, just ask them and they will probably be able to direct you to a seller!

Pattaya Underwater World Aquarium up on Sukhumvit Rd has both Arapaimas and Arowanas on display.
