Let me guess, you're using Firefox? That keeps happening to me too. One of these days I'm going to write to them and tell them they'd better get busy and make a browser that works.

are you getting a blue screen?

need to know, what programs you were running at the time?

is the system freezing or what?

do you presss control alt delete before you restart so you can see what processes are raping your system.

Have you tried using safe mode?

have you ran your virus and spy ware programs?

the list is endless

if you are getting a blue screen it could be a hardware problem

Diagnose over the net is very difficult. There just isnt enough info to go by. It sounds like some hardware is playing up.

when you get the bluescreen you'll have some numbers/text at the top

i.e.*** STOP: 0x000003438

Write this down and post them, from that can get an idea if its software or hardware.

I am having the same problem, and no new hardware installed. Will record the numbers that come up on the blue screen. When this happens computer becomes totally useless.Ctrl/Alt/delete does nothing. The use of F8 as recommended is also useless.

m mike:

Diagnosing computer issues via a forum is damn near impossible. However, sometimes it can be fun.

You need to answer the following questions precisely in order to obtain proper help:

What is your OS (Operating System)?

What is the latest Service Pack installed?

Did you install any type of hardware lately?

What kind of computer do you have?

What is the RAM (Random Access Memory) size?

What is your HD (Hard Drive) size?

How much HD free space is available?

What is your Page file size?

How many Page files do you have?

Where in the boot process are you getting the error message?

Study your event viewer (eventvwr at the command prompt).

What errors are occurring around the time your resetting your computer?

Is this the window you’re getting?

Read this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/317277

On a side note, in the past I’ve had trouble with various Virus packages. MacAfee’s being one of them.

I use, with reasonable success, Kaspersky. It’s a good idea to investigate other packages from time to time.

I hope this helps somewhat.

I can maybe stop it restarting, but maybe it won't help solve the problem (XP?)

1. right click "my computer" choose properties

2. click the advanced tab, under "startup and recovery" hit the settings button

3. de-select automatically restart

this will stop the computer restarting on a "serious error"

4. download spybot from here SPYBOT

5. install and do the updates

6. run through the setup

7. download updates

8. immunize

9. do a full scan

from the information you have given i'd guess at spyware and this will clean it, if it doesn't atleast it will help "cleanse" your system from anything

What chat software are you using? Some of these are notorious for memory leaks and can cause the system to re-start.

I stopped using Firefox (the lateest version) for the same reason and switched to Opera instead. I had no problems with Firefox on my old laptop but when I downloaded the newest vesion onto my new laptop, it was a toal nightmare. Opera is very good though it seems to have fewer "facilities" than Firefox. No major problems with Opera apart from the usual with TOT's truly s**t awful broadband service.

I run Windows XP, (genuine version :Chokdee: ), have 1Gb of RAM

It happened to me three times last night. I wasn't using the computer at the time, but it was on and sitting there, as I'd just finished using it. I'd almost be willing to bet it has something to do with the latest Microsoft update. I'm going to reset my computer to an earlier date and see if that helps. I have a feeling I'm going to be buying a MacBook Pro sometime soon.

The file ntf.sys really references the control and operation of the hard drive. Be prepared for either a re-install of XP or a complete re-format of the drive. I wouldn't also rule out the possibility that the HD is knackered.

Ta will get the guy to fix it

I would first try a system restore:

Start>Programs>Accessories>System Restore.

The system restore wizrd will launch, just follow the prompts and choose a restore point from the last time your machine was usable.

After this is done...make sure all of your drivers are up to date...you can usually get these from your manufacturers web site.

Good Luck!

Ken
