Thanks for the responses to the previous topic covering the first 10 lessons. I appreciate the corrections and doubtless there will be others to follow. I also acknowledge that Pimsleur is only second choice to personal tuition, but it seems to give a good basic grounding of sentence structure. So, for the time being, I am stuck with it and am sticking with it.

I first started learning Thai with this course, then had one to one lessons with a Thai who told me that most of it was wrong !

 

I have found there are so many local variations, one person will translate something then another will give you a different meaning to the same word or phrase. Very confusing !

couple of places you misheard "but", it should be "dtae" (แต่) but not "baar", i remember mishearing the same thing when i was starting out with pimsleur.

It's a good introduction but I've been told it's very formal Thai. My TGF laughed out loud at most of it and told me nobody speaks like that! But then most of my Thai friends are from Isaan!

Living here in London, where I don't have Thai friends, this Pimsleur set is better than nothing. I do pick up differences when I actually hear people speak in Thailand, but using Pimsleur as a base is more than fine by me.

It's a good introduction but I've been told it's very formal Thai. My TGF laughed out loud at most of it and told me nobody speaks like that! But then most of my Thai friends are from Isaan!

 

No your right, nobody speaks like that wherever you are in Thailand. Its good for a few holiday phrases but don't use it as a bible for how Thais speak.

 

Some of the language used is quite old as well. Eg: law waay = wine, should just be "waay"

One of the most frequent expressions I hear in Thailand is 'up to you'. It seems pretty appropriate here.

Thanks for the responses to the previous topic covering the first 10 lessons. I appreciate the corrections and doubtless there will be others to follow. I also acknowledge that Pimsleur is only second choice to personal tuition, but it seems to give a good basic grounding of sentence structure. Thanks for the list. I am going to print it out and carry it around with me. I was in Pattaya for three months and am returning in April. I am from the US and can speak Spanish fluently. I find that when I am searching for a Thai word a Spanish word pops outs of my mouth. Hopefully I can turn that around. I also purchased Rosetta Stone but it seems that learning phrases like, "the boy is under the airplane." is kind of useless. The other problem I encounter is using the proper tone. I assume everyone has that problem and it can only be rectified by getting back to the greatest place on earth and talking with as many bar girls as possible.

Does anyone else find it really difficult to learn thai, I am usually pretty good at picking up pigeon levels of languages but Thai just doesn't stick in my head....

 

The only things that seem to have stuck are:

 

Passa Angkrit (for the Where you from question)

Sam sip ha (for the How old you question)

Soi Song, Nueng etc (for the where you stay question)

Mao Krab (for the bloody bog of and stop trying to sell me crap question)

Can't think why they stuck as I hardly ever need to give these responses when in LOS....:-)
