You can take a kayak out yourself, if it's a motor boat you will need the correct licence/paperwork.

No licence or paperwork required for non-commercial boat use. The boat hire company must hold the correct paper work. The person hiring the boat just needs money.

 

Be prepared to say goodbye to any deposit you leave, they will always find some "new" damage when you bring it back.

 

Better to hire a boat with skipper and chuck him some Baht to let you drive.

 

Fishing shop near Bali Hali pier will sort you out..
