Anyone flown with Starlux?

Recommended Posts

Starlux flights are the most economical using my FF points. How is their economy class? I've read mostly good things, but some have reported canceled flights if the flights aren't full.

Anyway, thoughts?

I have flown STARLUX business class Lax - Tpe - Bkk round trip. It was excellent, far superior to Eva. I haven’t been in their economy, but I’d expect a relatively good product as well.

I flew with them last tewar Bkk Lax Return. They were ok. I had to fly back with 5 broiken ribs and they took good care of me. Nor exactly low budget luxury but definitely a viable choice

I just booked a R/T business class seat from BKK to LAX to BKK.

$3308/121,000+ baht

Flight dates are January 2025 and April 2025.

This was a nice deal compared to the others and the duration of the flights was right up there with only 90-minute layovers each way.

Has anyone traveled Starlux when booking through Alaska Airlines? I’m booked on a non-refundable SEA-TPE-BKK route in September (basic economy). Price was OK ($1300 USD), but I’m stressing about not being able to manage my trip or select my seat through Starlux.

Dealing with Alaska Airlines has been fine, but after contacting Starlux customer service, it doesn’t sound like I’m able to select a seat or really do much of anything until I check-in for my flights. They let me choose my meal option, but that was it. I’m just worried that I’m going to be stuck with a middle seat or that I’ll be unable to check-in for my flight online or through the Starlux app.

No experience with Alaska/Starlux, but that is the downside of a basic economy ticket - change/refund options are slim and you pretty much cannot do a thing until you get to the airport.

If you're flying domestic, you're also going to be one of the last people to board, but I have no idea how that works with International travel.

My first Starlux flight is booked for 1 month from today - OW Biz class booked using 85,000 Alaska miles.  I am SFO-TPE-BKK on this one, but just booked LAS-LAX-TPE-BKK using the same # of Alaska miles for next May.

I am DYING to get on the plane.....while I REALLY want to try Starlux, I'm admittedly MUCH more excited about getting back to Pattaya!  555

That is very high praise, as I think EVA is one of my favorite carriers to BKK (but a big part of that that is based on the value at only 75,000 EVA miles each way)

That is vey high praise for an airline, I "used" to fly CX quite a lot, but since the changes to Hong Kong, I can no longer feel comfortable flying through that airport.

Yeah, definitely the downside to flying the cheaper economy ticket. Hope your first Starlux experience goes well. All the videos and reviews I’ve looked at are great, so it should be a nice trip.

I flew on them last month in economy class using Alaska Airlines miles.  Yes, unfortunately I ran into the same issue & couldn’t reserve a seat in advance. I was able to check in 24 hours before my flight using the Starlux reference code listed on my Alaska booking.  There were aisle seats already reserved for me on both flights.  I was able to change my seat to the back section of the plane with 3 seats that were empty on the long overseas flight.

Overall both flights were very pleasant with good meals & service.  I am assuming my flight wasn’t very full because EVA & China Airlines fly the same route from TPE to SFO at similar times and are more well known.

They are certainly familiar with the competition. The founder of Starlux is the son of the founder of EVA and was briefly chairman of EVA as well. Starlux was formed after a succession dispute.

This helps put me at ease, thank you. Glad to hear you were still able to check-in online and get good seats. I really have not read a bad review of Starlux yet, so I’m excited to try them out. Hoping my flight similarly has some empty seats.

I'm flying the same route. I depart on the 13th.

I THOUGHT this was the case, but I just confirmed by doing it.

You CANNOT manage a Starlux booking booked via Alaska online....but you CAN call their customer service line, and they can book the seats for you.

I have been off of the line for less than 5 minutes, and I already have an email confirmation reflecting the seat assignments.  I am in business class, but assume PE and Economy can do it.

I was able to get the seats I wanted from SFO-TPE and from TPE-BKK.  Very happy!

Number for their LA Customer Support is (833) 971-0012.  They are only open Monday thru Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Be patient - it took a long while before my call was answered, and you have to keep pressing "1" about every 35-40 seconds to stay on the line.

Starlux seat map does not show on SeatGuru, but they have seating maps on the Starlux website (they only have 3 types of planes).

I’ve flown premium economy and economy STARLUX. Premium was booked via Alaska miles and you can call the customer service line to select your seats. Economy was booked using money so I booked directly on STARLUX website and asked for Alaska miles. This does one weird thing that’s manageable. When you select to earn miles under a different program, you cannot “login” under your created STARLUX account to manage the trip. It will tell you the request is denied because you’re booked to earn Alaska miles. You instead have to go to Manage Trip, add a trip as a guest and input your booking code to pull up your trip. I did this for my economy trip and was able to select my meal 3 weeks before the flight and select my seats.

WiFi on STARLUX sucks and the movies are much worse selection than Cathay or Delta (never flown Eva or China). But I can deal with it for the price and schedule. Although the WiFi is ALMOST a dealbreaker given how bad it is, but it’s still better than the WiFi -less Korea Air

While I attribute part of it to the fact that I have had very little interest in recent releases, the entertainment on Starlux WAS pretty brutal.  I was disappointed that I didn't think ahead and load some stuff to my iPad.

EVA was okay -- I think they have a tie-in with HBO, so I watched a few HBO shows that were enjoyable (I gave up HBO a few years ago, so they were "new" to me).

I booked through Alaska Air.

They just started service to Seattle, and were not doing it when I left, so transited SFO.

Checking in at Seattle, I had a new passport, and not sure if they still had the old passport number on my profile or if I typo'd an update, but had to deal with 2 hours of Alaska Airline customer service fuckery to get checked in and check my bag... (one lady desperately trying to help, thinking she had it resolved, telling me to drop my bag at the next counter, lady at the next counter just complaining openly in front of customers about the other lady actually trying to help people!!! rows of other agents just standing in front of other customers with phones glued to there ears doing nothing but waiting on hold....)  But all that really had nothing to do with Starlux.

Couldn't select seats until 24 hours before the flight left.  Used the guest access to starlux website.

Never figured out how to get electronic boarding passes. Physical passes weren't available in Seattle, was given them at the gate in SFO.

In TPE, connecting flight was 4/5 hours out, and couldn't find any gate information until 2 hours before the scheduled departure.

Plane was nice, new. Service was good. Entertainment system didn't have a lot of movies, few new ones, but was big, bright, blue tooth headphones were optional.  Bathrooms were clean. Seats were as nice as any other. Food was reasonable, really a little less western than most (i.e. broccoli in the eggs and sausage) but pretty pleasant.

From BKK, I had a really short, maybe one hour connection, rush across TPE. Bags made the connection fine. Kinda my fault not seeing the short connection time before and suddenly realizing hurry mode was in order, but it beats hours waiting.

Landing in Seattle, bags were out on the carousel before we got there.

I'd do it again.

It’s not just your little interest. STARLUX has around 40-50 movies on their system. Cathay I “bookmarked” close to 20 movies alone to be watched on the flight, let alone all the others I didn’t care about watching or had already seen. STARLUX just simply has a very small selection compared to others. A big benefit of Cathay is I love Hong Kong action thrillers and they have loads of them. STARLUX has a few Asian movies but all of them were dramas, no comedy or action Asian movies.

if you fly it again, call the customer service line and you can select whenever. But it’s like most non American Airlines (and maybe non European, I don’t know, I’ve never flown a European airline but many Asian and Latin American) - most people don’t select a seat until it’s available for free at checkin. I pre-selected my TPE-BKK to make sure I was front of plane and didn’t select my LAX-TPE ticket until checkin for free. Plane was 1/4 empty so for that huge flight it was good to wait to pick a row that was empty.

No electronic boarding passes, they need to be paper for international (for this airline at least). This was told to me by an agent at LAX.

My biggest gripe is unusable wifi. I like the airline in most other aspects other than the WiFi. If prices are comparable, I probably won’t choose STARLUX over another airline with reliable WiFi

Just booked Starlux one-way ($508 basic economy) for early March taking the red-eye from LAX to TPE. The Wi-Fi and movie selection aren't a big deal since I will sleep as much as possible. Going to slow travel a little in Taiwan before heading to Philippines and Thailand.

Price and schedule almost identical to EVA and China Airlines so I thought why not try out a different airline. According to a Reddit thread you can logon 48 hours before takeoff and select a seat. I'll post a quick review next month
