Pattaya versus Mamallapuram and big cities

Just returned from three months in India on business - two metropoli and one tourist town (albeit for pilgrims).

What a relief Thailand is for accommodation (and quiet and sensitive social behaviour after India).

If you think Bangkok is stressful, try Kolkata. People there don't even walk down the sidewalk politely. No wonder there are so many Indian punters in Thailand. Sona Gachi and Kamatipura are the epitome of sleaze by comparison with the go go bars here.

But the biggest problem I had was not rudeness or the constant use of horns (when totally unnecessary), but rather the poor value of hotels. Unlike Thailand with its client-friendly market, everywhere I visited in India paying guests competed for rooms. At least three times I was  kicked out because someone had booked the room. I was always informed the very day before or mere hours.

So, if Thailand isn't perfect enough for you, try India.

Once was enough for me.  Love the food, and the culture for the most part, but you've really got to have a high tolerance for absolute chaos to enjoy time in India.  Thailand streets are highly structured utopian models of efficiency compared to India.
