Medications - availability / legality to bring

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have been to Pattaya a couple of times now but I intend to visit for 2 months in early 2024. However, I have 7 different prescription medicines to take daily. Last time I was in Thailand I did see people buying some medication OTC which in the UK is prescription only.

My question is how can I find out if my particular medicines are available OTC in Pattaya or if I need to bring them and if the latter - are there any restrictions - either on which medications can be brought in and/or quantity restrictions of the same.

I did Google a pharmacy near the hotel where I will be stopping (Guardian on Pattayasaisong) but it only gives a street address - no phone, email or similar. So, does anyone know if I could contact a pharmacist over there somehow? I'm sure there are loads of places and most of them bigger than this one that I know.

If anyone has some pharmacy names that I can look up to check with them, and any other pertinent info, that would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Guardian pharmacy sells almost everything. What is it you need to bring in? Most things are fine with a prescription and doctors note

I brought my prescription Meds with me in June last year without issue and will be doing the same again in 4 weeks time.  If you want to dm me the list of your meds I would be happy to check availability and cost with a couple of pharmacies.

I bring 6 months worth of prescriptions in with me which is more than I’m supposed to. But I can’t remember the last time I was searched, if ever, in over 30 years.
That said most things are available over the counter. And if you bring a copy of your prescriptions with you, or even the empty packet with the pharmacists sticker on it, I think you’ll get anything.
The only thing I had trouble getting was an extra weeks worth of Prednisone when I wanted to use it for a week beyond the time the Thai hospital had prescribed for me. The reasons for that are fair enough when I looked at the dangers of using it longer term.

On my last trip I took the packets of my 5 meds to a pharmacy to check availability after my upcoming ex-pat status. All were available over the counter but some were double my current dose, so I will be taking a pill cutter with me. It may be that some meds require a Thai prescription though mine do not.

@David2268's offer is a great gesture, I would take him up on it. My GP will only issue 3 months meds in advance, I have never had a problem brining meds but all the packets are labelled with my name.

Any place to buy Ambien? I have prescription, but it will run out before my trip ends

I take some meds on and off so I don’t have the old packet/bottle, are most non-chain pharmacies fine with giving medications without needing the prescription? Could arrange a last minute appointment with my doctor but the fees keep going up 😕

If needed, you can just see a doctor while you are here. and get any needed prescription for things that are not OTC.

I personally recommend https://dr-olivier-clinic.com/

Don't forget to take your passport. No appointment needed ... opens at 9:30am .... rarely much of a wait.

Only recognise a couple of yours, some of mine are over 4,000BT for a month, luckily I can them a lot cheaper at home and usually bring 6 months wiorth with me. Never had any issues.

Keep original script packet and doctors letter to be sure though.

I was going to ask a question about this. I also need to bring three months prescriptions in and customs website says two months maximum?

Has anyone else had any problems on arrival? Thanks for any advice

Ozempic is not a controlled drug

If the prescription medicine not listed as controlled drugs. The medications are likely to be classified as medication preparations according to the Drug Act B.E. 2510. A patient under treatment for medications in that category is allowed to transport for personal use medications in a quantity Not Exceeding 30 Days of prescribed usage. However, such medications fall under the responsibility of the Bureau of Drug Control, Thai FDA. You can consult that office directly by sending an email to the Director of the Bureau of Drug Control: [email protected]  Please also send a cc copy of that email to [email protected]

It can be bought here, some pharmacies have it in stock, others you need to have them bring it in from Bangkok.

Try Fascino on North Pattaya Road, next to city hall

If it floats, flies or fucks, RENT IT!!!!! "He who hesitates, masturbates"

I am a pharmacist irl.
You can get (actual) Ozempic here but at THB11K I think it is better value at home.
Also there is all sorts of masquerading going on, usually swapped for much cheaper long acting insulin.
Feels like semaglutide but you wont loose much weight and run the very real possibility of getting a hypo which will kill you.
Semaglutide is very sensitive to temperature so you really have to buy from a reputable source or you have zero guarantee it hasn't being sitting in some muppets van for a few days.
For bring it from home I get an insulated bag, fill it with frozen steaks, wrap the Ozempic with insulating foil and stick it between the steaks. I stick a max/min thermometer in with it. Arrives within limit after 24 hours and it budges so little I would be reasonably confident about 48 hours. Don't want steak use ice locks and frozen peas.

Customs don't interfere with meds with a pharmacy label, they would need a pharmacist to assist them. The one exception is if you get a dog strike due to narcotics, then they will want all the paperwork.

The Thai embassy site has a good place to search on drugs that cannot be brought in.

I get prescribed dex-amphetamine at home and it's says on the site that even with a doctors note, it's illegal and make it clear bringing it in will involve serious arse pounding prison time.

I swapped it over to Vyvanse which is the same active ingredient as Dex except it's a slow release thing and the site states I don't even need to declare it.

Weird considering it's the same thing but there you go.

Here is the database I used.

https://permitfortraveler.fda.moph.go.th/nct_permit_main/Main/FRM_checkdrug_index

Neither Ozempic or semaglutide are mentioned meaning it's not even a concern.

Here is an example of the information you get

Vyvanse is not identical to Adderall. Adderall is a mix of 4 amphetamine salts all of which contain and amount to 75% of the medication being dextroamphetamine and Vyvanse contains lisdexamfetamine. That's metabolized into dextroamphetamine over time.

Thailand bans dextroamphetamine and of course methamphetamine.

If Vyvanse works then bring that but don't tempt fate with Adderall or any pure amphetamine. Also be mindful of where you connect. UAE and Japan may ban both and both are very hard core about amphetamine and UAE about much more, like most or all benzodiazepenes and narcotics.

The Thai FDA will at least permit the latter with advanced notice and the right forms.

Dex is not the same as Adderall either.

I wish I could get Adderall in Australia.

You can get it if you have an existing US script but it's not licenced here. The

What I mean by identical is the end result compound active ingredient is identical between Dex and Vyvanse even if there is an extra step with Vyvanse.

Apart from the max equivalent dose of Vyvanse being less than the 40mg of Dex, it feels identical and I actually prefer it because it's only a single pill instead of 8.

Dexamphetamine and dexedrine (trade name) and dextroamphetamine are the same drug. It's pointless discussing enantiomers and isomers of amphetamine in this instance.

Because it becomes an analysis of what's banned and what's allowed when Thailand is clear on the subject. Thailand won't care that because it's not 100% dextroamphetamine it's ok. You can't bring in 75% diamorphine and sugar for the same logic.

Adderall is banned because it's 75% dextroamphetamine and 25% levoamphetamine.

Vyvanse isn't banned because it's a prodrug of amphetamine and is metabolized into amphetamine by the body. And thus far is considered to have lower abuse potential.

Controlled drugs, or what Thailand calls psychotropic drugs are what they allow in or not under three categories limited amounts without notice, limited amounts with pre-clearance or banned outright. They're not going to care about Ozempic or blood pressure medications. Even if at home, there only available with a prescription.

People conflate prescription drugs with controlled or scheduled drugs. The latter are always prescription drugs, the former might not be controlled drugs.

Dex is different to Adderall which you insinuated is identical when you interchanged Dex with Adderall in your reply above.

At no time did I mention Adderall in my responses until after you brought it up.

It is not the same active ingredients.

Dex and Vyvanse have an identical active ingredient as the end point making them identical in my book.

Everything you said in the second half is what I originally said.

Having a hard time understanding me stating that Dex is completely illegal in Thailand and explaining my process of changing over to Vyvanse which is legal while giving a link to the official database with being lectured on why I should not bring Dex in.

It's like I am currently in an alternate universe at the moment.

Ignore everything I said and concentrate on the official link from the Thai government on which drugs are not allowed in which is what the topic is about.

Also the idea that Vyvanse has any more or less addiction potential must be something the owner of Vyvanse must have said...

I would fall of a cliff if I could not get one or the other.

I think I have exhausted my responses on this topic LOL
