Drive Trip Pattaya to Koh Samui & Krabi - stops??

We are planning to do a driving holiday from Pattaya to Koh Samui and Krabi, so we are looking for advice on scenic places to stop overnight and points of interest on the way.

Originally planned to take the Pattaya - Koh samui ferry down but its out of commission unfortunately. So we will drive down and back.

First overnight stop will probably be Hua Hin. I also have Phang Nga Bay and Ao Manao Beach - Prachuap Khiri Khan area on the list.

I'm looking for any suggestions to add to my research list of locations.

Definitely Ao Manao, where you can stay (weekdays) at the big military hotel (used to be OK) on-the-beach, but it gets booked-up with military guests at weekends.

And Ban Krut (South of Prachuap) has a couple of OK resorts, on that endless beach that runs from Cha-Am virtually-all-the-way to Surat.
