Flipper Lodge Hotel (soi 8) - April 2019

This is my hotel review for Flipper Lodge hotel on soi 8 in Pattaya. My stay was from April 9, 2019 to April 16, 2019 (7 nights). I made the booking through the Booking.com website. I booked 2 Superior Double rooms with city view, each with one large double bed. The price I paid for this in total was € 604 excluding breakfast (at that time 22,680 baht), so € 302 per room.
As a special request during my booking, I asked that both rooms be located close to each other. This requirement was also met, both rooms were on the 5th floor on the same corridor.

Location

The hotel is well located on soi 8. You are on the beach in 1 minute. In terms of nightlife, soi 7 is less than a minute walk away. Soi 6 and Walking Street are both a few minutes away. At the other end of soi 8 is Second Road with more than enough to do. At night there is a fair amount of noise until about 2 - 3am. For persons who have difficulty sleeping from this, it may be advisable to buy earplugs. I bought wax earplugs which felt very natural and let almost no sound through. There are more than enough places to eat nearby and several shopping centers to buy clothes and other items.

Arrival (reception + staff).

Upon arrival at the hotel, a staff member came out to help us with our luggage. We then had to fill out a small paper at the front desk with our information and signature. We also had to pay a deposit worth 500 baht, this for any damage or when you use paid items from the room (e.g. condoms or drinks that are standard in the room). The level of English the person spoke was reasonable but definitely not fluent. They were friendly though. A staff member then escorted us to our rooms.

Room

The room was sufficiently large (24m2) with all the standard necessities such as a small fridge, an electronic safe, air conditioning, a bathroom with shower, towels, a towel for the pool, ...

I had a good look at my room on arrival and everything was clean. The shower and toilet were nice and clean, the bed was well made and there was no dirt anywhere on the floor. However, my friend had some bad luck because he had a small lizard sitting on the curtains of his room. We were able to put it outside with a cloth, but it was not practical because you can only open the window a few centimeters. For the rest, his room was also completely in order.

In the room there was an extra chair, a small table and a small armchair. The air conditioning made little noise and cooled the room very well. The only irritating thing was that in the bathroom there was no elevation to stop the water from the shower. As a result, the water sometimes flowed under the shower curtain and I had to wipe the floor with a towel.

Every day, usually just after noon, the cleaning crew came by. If you hang the sign outside on your door handle that you don't want to be disturbed, over time the front desk will call the room to ask when it can be cleaned.

Will i repeat: yes! I'm planning on booking Flipper Lodge hotel for my trip in February/March 2022

I forgot to mention something in my previous post that is definitely worth knowing.

On the day of my departure, the Songkran festival was still going on. This meant that water was being thrown on the streets and in the bars in front of and along our hotel all the time. The cab I had reserved contacted me to say that the driver was going to wait for us on Beach Road and that he was not going to drive as far as the hotel parking lot. The excuse she used was that the car was way too big and couldn't fit in the street. Of course, I didn't believe any of that.

However, it was not an option to walk to Beach Road as we would be completely wet. We would then have to get on the plane with wet clothes (and even worse: a wet suitcase). I then went to explain our problem at the reception desk. After a few minutes they made a suggestion which I had not expected. At the back of the hotel they made us crawl down a ladder. Then we came to a small alley. At the end of the alley we could walk through the police station and we came to the street where all the cabs were waiting for potential customers. Once we had climbed down the ladder, 2 employees of the hotel then handed over our suitcases.

This was an unexpected but ideal solution to our problem. This allowed us (and our suitcases) to get dry into a cab. I thought this was worth mentioning. So I personally found the helpfulness of the hotel staff to be very good.

Sometimes I would go into my friend's room (or vice versa) for a drink or a chat, so it was just easier if we were on the same floor. At one point my friend had taken a Thai to his room but in the heat of the moment he noticed that he had run out of condoms. Since he was suddenly at my door in his underpants asking for condoms I think it was more pleasant for him that my room was nearby instead of having to come up or down a few floors ;)

Of course, this was not very important to us. If they had given us rooms on different floors this would not have been a problem at all. But you can always ask. As they say in my country: a "no" you have, a "yes" you can get.

Did you ever get the 500b deposit back?

For years I used to stay at flipper lodge (great location back in the day)

I never touched the mini bar, but it became a given that they would try to charge me a couple hundred baht.

I argued the point the first few times but when the taxi is waiting and there’s a plane to catch, I couldn’t be bothered debating for an hour.

i still loved staying there, I only moved because my area of playtime moved to the bukahao area.

I was never asked for a deposit in all the many, many times I stayed there. It was a long time ago though!

They did give me a good rate and my favourite room most trips - but I did stay 3 times a year for several years so they knew me.

Me also, many trips for many years.

and when I say debate, I don’t mean an argument, more a time consuming effort to ensure it was a mistake.

which is quite funny because majority of the time I would out the deposit straight into the tip box. By denying me the full deposit just meant less for them.

my mate actually started just eating his minibar because he knew he was paying anyway.

No, I did not get my deposit back. I hadn't used anything from the minibar and hadn't touched the condoms. The sheets were clean and nothing was broken in the room so I don't know why this was not refunded. It is as you say, you can ask the desk staff the reason why this is not refunded but if your taxi is waiting you prefer to catch your flight on time.

In the end it was only about 15 euros and the rest of my experiences were positive so this won't stop me from booking again at Flipper Lodge hotel in the future.

Not getting my deposit back would be enough reason never to return for me .  I beleive this hotel is closed now and one of the many that is locked and chained up with people sleeping rough in the entrance . The whole soi is shut down .  Pattaya will not be the same , in my view , even to the extent that now its known as New Pattaya

I stayed at this hotel again a couple of weeks ago. They still have no issues if you take one guest at a time. If you take two, you need to pay 500 baht.
