At only 50% effective, why bother?

From your linked article :

"With the inclusion of this data, the efficacy rate is now 50.4% (at preventing symptomatic infections) said researchers.

But Butantan stressed that the vaccine is 78% effective in preventing mild cases that needed treatment and 100% effective in staving off moderate to serious cases."

I.E. The chances of you getting even moderately sick with this vaccine is 0%.  So it's a little bit more than "50% effective".

Yes the "efficacy %" is somewhat misleading as it is also related to how it was tested and when.  All the vaccines will prevent fatalities and significant symptoms etc.

I am personally holding out for the J&J vaccine as it is a 1 shot wonder - which will be perfect for mw when I get back home from work.

GF in Bangkok just got wind that 2 people in her condo building tested positive.  Needless to say, she's freaking out a bit.  I told her to wash her hands often and wear a mask when out and about.  Not much more she can do as vaccines aren't available to her yet.

Posted on another thread but it's worth adding here too, China's top disease control official has said the efficacy of the country's Covid vaccines is low, in a rare admission of weakness.

50% is poor but does meet the minimum requirements for a vaccine and it should come as no surprise when the Chinese were not publishing their results.

I thought I read somewhere that Brazil's problem was too much reliance on the Chinese vaccine?

I think Brazil has another, somewhat larger, problem.

That’s not something we can discuss though.

I thought I read that the myth about the Chinese vaccine came from one discredited report.

Suit yourself, 50% of the world will be inoculated with it, including all the tourists in Thailand by 2022 or at least the vast majority of them.

It ain't what you do it's the way that you do it.
