spiky things that protect coral

Hi All

Got a question.... myself and some friends were on a fishing trip yesterday when during the afternoon we anchored just off from one of the islands near koh lan when a few of them including my t.g went for a swim my mate and my t.g went to swim to the beach once they got near and could stand up they both got spiked by those spiky things around the corals and though she tried she cant seem to get them out and now although not in great pain is a bit on the sore side.

Does anyone know anything about these beasties?... any tips or remedies? or is a trip to the doctors or A+E necesarry any info would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

Mac

Sea urchin spikes?

I found this on the net

"I've removed sea urchin spikes several times in the past.

No need for LA.

1. Pare away any surrounding callous which may make removing them difficult.

2. Using a no 11 blade gently ease each spike out so that it can be grasped with tweezers (rather than forceps since the spikes are brittle).

painstaking but your pt will love you for the end result!"

If she has not had them removed yet the best thing is to stay off that foot or she will only succeed in driving them in deeper requiring surgery instead of a simple pull out.

May the best of your past, be the worst of your future.

When on Koh Chang, one of our party stepped on some coral that punctured his foot. I think he used some gasoline and a blowtorch to cauterize the wound and it cleared right up.
