Photography: Proper light conditions for pink skin tones??

Hi,

Here is a question that was deleted on the Nikon forums. Hopefully some kind-hearted soul here can advise on this matter.

As an avid amateur photographer I constantly try to improve my skills. But lately I have found myself struggling with a key aspect during my shoots. Shooting with a Nikon D7500 with a AF-S DX 18-140 mm lens and the built-in flash, but indoors the pink skin tones looks  either too saturated or under exposed. I am kind of limited to auto-settings as I am shooting hand-held whilst simultaneously engaging with my model. Luckily the D7500 and lens offers a superb auto-focus capability, so that part is not an issue.

I am considering trying a ring LED flash like below, but would love to hear from more experienced photographers how to overcome this hurdle.

Get your flash off the camera, or bounce the flash off the ceiling.  Are you doing still's or video?  I think your issue may be white balance, post a sample photo of what you think the issue is.

Your lens is good for traveling, but if you really want to do some quality photography you should be using prime lens's or a shorter zoom.

Do like the bars do : flood the shooting area with dark UV light. Turns browns skin into pink.

Thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunately, I would break the rules if I posted adult subject matters in this section. Been thinking of getting an alternative lens, so that is probably the way to go.

Instead of buying more lens, flash etc, why not try Photoshop CC.

I am afraid my Photoshop skills are a bit too limited to get the quality I am striving for. Plus I figured I wanted to sanity check my equipment set-up with more experienced members in the event I had overlooked something in the upstream part of the process.

But I get your point. Perhaps it is time to bite the bullet and deepen my post processing skills while I figure out the next step. My understanding is that professionals use a separate diffused pussy light. But being a one man operation, that would be impractical for my use-case.

Your equipment is fine...I would suggest using the Nikon software that came with your camera to adjust your white balance...Are you shooting RAW or JPEG???

Really would suggest that you post a photo or two, so we can see what the issue is.

I took these yesterday with my Nikon Z6.  No post processing other than scaling down the images. Fluorescent and ambient lighting and bounced light off the ceiling with a generic diffuser.  I let the camera choose white balance and ISO.

My " expertise" on Photoshop ,apart from cropping the photo,  is limited to 4 items listed in Adjustments,

But here is an example (before and after) of what you can do in Photoshop CC to improve a photo.

It seems to have a built-in flash.

Regarding "pink skin tones" there appears to be plenty available in Photoshop CC. I have never used this and haven't a clue how to but it might be worth trying it and look for a "tutorial".

I have included a view of the girl in pink who is the girl I posted in Post No:13 for anyone who might be interested in her front view..
