Sri Lankan scammers arrested by Immigration Police

Earlier this week, Police Colonel Ahnnat, the Chief of Pattaya’s Immigration Office received information from a group of 7 Sri Lankan Tourists of a possible scam involving promises of highly paid jobs for Sri Lankans in Romania. They were first sent to Thailand with the intention of travelling onward to Romania. The Complainants claimed that 4 of their fellow countrymen were organizers of the scam which cost the 7 men 100,000 Baht each, split into two payments of 50,000 Baht each which covered the cost of visas to Thailand and a further visa to Romania. However the group was told that their visas to Romania had been refused and they would have to find their own way back to Sri Lanka. A request for a refund from the 4 men was refused who also threatened the men not to go to the authorities either in Thailand or when they return to Sri Lanka or they would have problems. Following a short investigation, the 4 suspects were located and arrested at the Jomtien Complex Condotel and taken to the Immigration office on Thursday Evening. The four suspects aged between 31 and 45 appeared relaxed at the Immigration Office and denied all allegations of deception. One of the arrestees Mr. Welgamge Gamini Weerasinghe aged 45 was found to have an outstanding arrest warrant in Sri Lanka. It was decided that the four suspects and the 7 complainants should be deported back to Sri Lanka where authorities there will take up the case.
