You may be looking at flights out of BKK, which is Suvarnabhumi, flights from there to Phuket are more exxy.

Have a look at DMK, Don Mueang (Air Asia, NOK Air), which will be cheaper.

go to a flight meta search engine and search from bangkok (BKK AND DMK) to Phuket. 
google flights
skyscanner
momondo
etc

also check airasia and some other low cost carriers separately, their flights will not appear in the meta search engines. BKK Phuket flights should be extremely cheap nearly always.
