Confused about 2 years temp driver's license and 5 year thereafter.

Hi. Just read online that the very first Drivers license received will only be good for 2 years temporary and receive 5 years license thereafter. Is this true?

What was your experience? Did you get a 5 or 2 years the very first time?

No, you always get a temp licence first. There is no option for a perm licence when you go to the LTO.

I think that website is old, as it references 1 yr temp licences and 1 yr permanent...you don't get those options any more.

You get 2 year temp licence first - everyone does including Thai people.

It used to be a 1 year temp licence, it is now 2 year temp licence.

On the web site...

"What you will need when applying for your Thai drivers license with a five year validity:

• temporary Thai driving license."

The temporary driving licence being the 2 year licence you get first.

Read the first two sentences very carefully. He is talking about getting a 5 year license AFTER already having the temporary one for one year.

The second sentence makes it clear he has no idea what he is talking about.

I think he was confused by the case where someone wasn't eligible for a 5 year license because they did not have a long term permission to stay and got another one year temporary license. He must think the second 1 year (now 2 year) license was a permanent license when it was just another temporary license.

Depending on your visa status you can remain with 2 year temporary licences in perpetuity
