I know "uaan" (อ้วน) means fat/overweight

 

But when used in general conversation, as in using "uaan" as opposed to someones name could it be meant/interpreted as derogatory?

 

Do Thai's refer to each other by there size as opposed to there name in general?

Yes, it could be an insult, but not necessarily. Just like the English word fat. I have heard the word used as a Thai nickname.

I have had girls call it me as a pet type name. I think if they say it a little and add it with other words... like mee uaan (fat bear) its ok.. but if they say it too much, its a definitely a hint and it does my head in!

I've used it loads as well as pom pui (spelling) which is the same. Never had a bad reaction to it but then again I've never used it when talking about or to a woman. Its usually aimed at some lard arse Farang on the beach. I think Thais are more thick skinned when it comes to things like this, well in Patts anyway.

 

I dont think I'd use it with women in general if I were you if speaking to more middle class Thais. I wouldnt worry too much in Patts to be honest but I wouldnt take the piss or make them lose face all the same. ALL women are bothered about their weight no matter where in the world.
