US tourist 30 day overstay question

My friend who's travelling from US has booked a trip for 35 or 36 days in Thailand.  He has a valid US passport.  What are his options since Thai immigration will allow him 30 days with the tourist stamp?   Should he proceed through Immigration and then correct the problem at a Thai travel shop such as JP Travel in Bangkok or what?  He departs U.S. Feb. 26,  and was not aware of the 30 day restriction.

Thanks for suggestions.

After he's been here three weeks he can get a 30 day extension from the nearest immigration office. He can do it himself for 1900 Baht or pay a lot more and have one of the visa shops help him.

It's possible he could have an issue with the airline when checking in because he has a return date longer than 30 days.

U.S. citizens carrying a tourist passport and in possession of an onward or return airline ticket do not require a visa to enter Thailand. The passport must have at least six months validity remaining to be allowed entry.  Upon entry, Thai immigration officials will place an immigration stamp in the passport permitting a 30-day stay in Thailand if arriving by air or land. This time limit may subsequently be extended for an additional 30 days by paying a 1,900 baht fee to the Thai Immigration Bureau office.  The headquarters of the Thai Immigration Bureau is located at Government Center Chaengwattana Building B, No. 120, Moo 3, Chaengwattana Road, Tungsonghong Sub-District, Laksi District, Bangkok 10210, 66-2-287-3101 through 66-2-287-3110.

Visa Overstays

If an individual does not depart Thailand prior to expiration of his/her airport permit or visa, the individual is in the country illegally. In order to depart Thailand, it will be necessary to pay an overstay fine. The fine for overstaying a visa is 500 Baht per day, up to a maximum of 20,000 Baht. The fine is payable to the Immigration Bureau, the Suvarnabhumi Airport Immigration office, or other departure point.

You can also have your friend go to the local Thai CONSULATE, and procure himself a 60-day or 180-day Multiple-Entry- Thai-Visa (METV). he can stay for a continuous period of 60-days. That's what they are for.

Validity of visa
The validity of the single-entry visa is 90 days (enter within 90 days from when the visa is issued for a stay up to 60 days) or 180 days for a Multiple-Entry Tourist Visa (METV) (must use all entries within 180 days from when the visa is issued with a stay up to 60 days for each entry).
Period of stay
Travelers with this type of visa will be permitted to stay in Thailand for a period not exceeding 60 days at any time for each entry. The period begins on the date you arrive in Thailand.

There are major blue signs behind the immigration dests at swampy with the relevant fines, think it is 500baht /day up to 90 days and anything more the fine and ban.

Guess if you rock up 20 days late you will be relieved of 10,000 baht at the tables behind.

If you can not pay or get stopped before the immigration desks 2018 may not be your year.

The main problem is that the airline may not let him board in the USA. If there’s a Thai Consulate near him, best bet is to get an SETV before travelling. Not expensive.

Failing that, he needs to hope the check in staff are goi g to be ok, or try to sweet talk the Supervisor if a problem arises.

It’s very unlikely he’ll have a problem on arrival in BKK and it’s easy enough to extend the 30-day Visa Exempt Entry at an Immigration Office in Thailand.

Is that so difficult to get a single Thai Tourist Visa in America ?

It would eliminate a lot of troubles even before you travel to Thailand. :)

The 30-Days Extension would be my second choice, but will the Airline accept you ?

I can confirm the issue he could have leaving the US. It has happend to me because they could not figure out yiu arrive 1 day after departing and the monitor kept saying 31 days.

The carriers are required to confirm a valid Visa for the duration of the trip. If the agent is doing their job, or simply reading the computer monitor, they will likely going to be denied boarding.

Several options to get around the Visa issue is with "rental tickets"or throw away tickets. My option would be to just our buy a fully refundable ticket ( if he can swing the initial cost) and then cancel in Thailand fir a full refund.
