Surge Protectors

I bought a surge protector for my laptop.  Most of the wall sockets in my condo are 2 prong.  The surge protector has a 3 prong plug. 

If it is plugged into an extension cord with 3 prong sockets and a 2 prong plug that is plugged into a 2 prong wall socket will it still serve as a surge protector?

I'm no electrician but I've had a similar set-up for years and I've never had a problem.
