paying a rental deposit?

I have found a apartment in VT2 which i want to rent...I dont really know the owner. They have requested a deposit to hold my reservation. Since they dont take credit cards they want a wire transfer. Is this common practice. In my mind i have no recourse. How is this normally handled?

have never stayed there but deposits are best exchanged p2p agree a small holding deposit if you must given that its high season or perhaps there might be someone on PA can vouch for this apartment block and can advise

firt time i ever did this was a couple months back.. i paid for the whole stay to the owner ( wire transfer ). then he died 2 weeks before my trip was due....LOL..( i still had the place i paid for.. but i had to contact his co worker and such )

all of this just to save on a couple hundred $$

 

i would never do this again.. its to much of a hassle..

I would get them to agree to take deposit when i arrive:

What happens if you get apartment/Condo and you dont like it?

Just another little thought, How do you know the person you are paying your deposit to owns the condo?

and if there is more trouble at airport and you can not make it into Thai. You lose deposit:

I think it is fair fair for them to ask for a small deposit. What happens if you just don't show up? The owner has been holding that block of time for you and may lose out by not renting to another person if you don't show. The deposit amount should be relatively small and based on the amount of time you're reserving for.

 

As for identifying the owner, I can't help you except for you to post name and contact info for this apartment. Maybe someone has used them in the past. If you're worried about the deposit, suggest to your contact that you use Paypal or another third party escrow service to hold the money. That way if you show up and they are not the owner, then you can get your money back.

I was asked to use Pay Pal to pay deposit,

The exchange rate was absolutly rubbish with Pay Pal;

Hello it is normal to pay 1 month deposit. When you rent a larger room or a condo. I always do it and i have no problem with this. I do recomend Fairproperties. Them have a office in the view talay 1 and one more on the theprasit road. Wery friendly staf over there.

I totally agree that a deposit is in order. I just have worries sending $400 to someones account with no receipt. Anyway here is her name Ms.buachan sricum.... if someone knows please let me know...If i was renting apartments i would be taking credit cards for deposits, But what do i know?
