I'm posting here as I'm not sure how many people read the Cambodia section.

As things seem to be getting more difficult in Thaiand, Cambodia moves in the other direction.

The Cambodian government will soon allow foreigners to stay for up to three years on a single visa in a bid to meet a goal of 7 million overseas travellers annually by 2020.

Tourism Minister Thong Khon said the three-year multiple-entry visa -- a new government strategy to encourage foreigners to come to the country -- will allow foreigners to stay in the country for up to three years, the Khmer Times reported on Friday.

The multiple-entry visa application will be available from Sept 1 to foreigners from all countries, Khon said, with different prices according to the length of stay although pricing details of the new visas were unavailable.

The new entry visa will allow tourists and businesspeople to enter and exit Cambodia many times during the visa’s validity period, Khon said.

“They can apply for a visa in Cambodia and can travel in and out many times according to the visa they apply for. Tourists and investors can apply for a two-year stay or three-year stay with multiple entries.”

Cambodia hopes to welcome at least 7.5 million foreign tourists by 2020, according to a newly announced goal. Of the targeted number, 2 million are Chinese and 300,000 Japanese, according to Cambodia Tourism Marketing Strategy 2016-2020.

Ho Vandy, secretary-general of Cambodia’s National Tourism Alliance, said the move to extend visas was part of a strategy to develop the country’s tourism sector.

“It is a strategy to make the target [of seven million tourists] come true after the private sector and government work together,” Vandy said.

It would really help to encourage both tourists and investors, and foreigners who provide training and work in social development to come to Cambodia, Vandy said.

For Cambodia’s tourism visa, people from Asean countries are currently granted a stay of 14 days to a month and tourists from other regions -- the European Union and the United States for example -- are allowed a month. Business people can currently renew their visa for a month, three months, six months or up to a year.

I have been. Know guys who have/are living there. Said its cheaper than Thailand with no hassle from the police and the locals don't bother you. I would go back for a visit but seeing im there for a holiday the pull off Thailand is too great. In terms off a semi/full retirement its something i would research.

The one year business visa in Cambodia (you didn't need a business or make any investments in the country) was easy enough to come by in the past :

"...Cambodian “ordinary” visa. For anyone who is considering staying in Cambodia for an extended period of time, the ordinary visa (E class) is the best option. This visa used to be called the business visa but is now called the normal or ordinary visa. It is also valid for 30 days and costs $35.  The difference between the ordinary visa and the tourist visa is that the ordinary one can be extended indefinitely. Be aware that although the “ordinary” visa is often called a “business visa,” it does not confer the right to work in Cambodia. In order to be legally employed, you will need a Cambodia work permit, but you do not need a work permit to get a visa.

Once you have your first 30-day ordinary visa for Cambodia, you can extend it from inside the country for 1, 3, 6, or 12 months. It’s advisable to extend it for 6 or 12 months, as these visa types are multiple-entry. The 1- and 3-month ordinary visas are single-entry only, meaning that if you leave for a weekend trip to Vietnam, you’ll need to get a new Cambodian visa when you return....."

".....Visa extensions are issued by the large immigration office located directly across the road from Phnom Penh International Airport.

Extensions are easy to arrange, taking just a couple of days. It costs US$45 for one month (for both tourist and business visas), US$75 for three months, US$155 for six months and US$285 for one year (the latter three prices relate to business visas only). It's pretty straightforward to extend business visas ad infinitum...."

They were talking about a retirement visa:

"....The new visas will require proof of financial stability and documentation proving retiree status from applicants’ home countries, said Sok Veasna, a department director at the Interior Ministry’s general department of immigration.

But, unlike business visas, officially called “Category E” visas, the new retirement visas—to be called “Category ER” visas—will be valid for up to a year and will not require a work permit, according to Major General Veasna....."

Maybe this three year visa is the end result of those discussions within the government? :Disease1:

Could be a good alternative plan, just depends on the cost of this 3year visa. Shame Cambodia has so many shady characters there

Is an option for sure. Close to Thailand which is good for breaks and medical treatment and catching up with mates.
