Using Thai Driver Licence in Oz (WA)

Recommended Posts

TGF just got her motor car licence in Pattaya last week, it's good for 2 years, we'll be spending 3-6 months in WA soon and I was thinking about going to Chonburi and getting her an IDP, but reading online WA laws it says tourists driving in WA can use their foreign licence. Does anyone know how long a tourist can use a foreign licence for in WA? Will TGF be OK driving in WA on her Thai licence for up to 6 months? Should we still get her an IDP or is that not necessary?

As Thai licences has the details in Thai and English she can drive in WA with no need for an IDP.

She would not be eligible for an IDP on a provisional license anyway.  Once the 2 year provisional is used up and she applies for the 5 year license she will then be eligible for apply for the IDP.  She can apply for the IDP at the same office that she gets the drivers license at.

until she has a full licence any car insurance is invalid [in wa anyway]

So provisional drivers can't be insured in Western Austrailia?

Or are you saying overseas provisional drivers can't be insured in Western Austrailia?

Unless there have been recent policy changes, the post by Kurt contradicts information put out by Pattaya City Expats Club and other Thailand forums. According to many other sources you can get a Thailand IDP with a temporary licence (previously 1 year, now 2 years)

Here's a copy from the Pattaya Expats site:

INTERNATIONAL DRIVING PERMIT ISSUED IN THAILAND

If you have a valid Thai driving license and wish to use it when traveling outside of Thailand in countries that accept International Driving Permits (IDPs), you can obtain the Thai issued IDP at some Land Transport Offices.

A Thai IDP cannot be used in Thailand and is valid for one year from the date of issue or the expiration of your Thai driving license if it expires in less than one year.

CHONBURI LAND TRANSPORT OFFICE

You can apply for the IDP at the Chonburi Land Transport Office, 147 Moo 1, Sukhumvit Road, Tambon Nong Muang, Chonburi. Driver License Division telephone number 038-275-202 or 038-286-227. The Banglamung Land Transport Office, which issues Thai driving licenses does not issue IDPs at the present time. Document requirements vary depending on whether you currently have a one year Thai driving license or a five year Thai driving license.

Holders of a temporary (1 yr license) need 1. Your passport and copy of passport 1 page. 2. The affidavit of the address from embassy or immigration. 3. Medical certificate.

Holders of a 5 years license need 1. Your passport and copy of passport 1 page. 2. The affidavit of the address from embassy or immigration. 3. One hour of training there.

So holders of a 5 year needs to do one hour of training there.

But a holders of one/two year licence ( who have only just passed the test and most have never driven in traffic) do not need to do any extra training
