My Aus passport will expire before my current extension will be finished when can I renew my passport without upsetting my extension ? or do I just renew it and then show both passports ?

and or does this upset 90 day reporting or once again is it a matter of taking both (old and new) to immigration

I don't know about extensions but I got a new passport while in Thailand earlier this year on a 30 day visa waiver stay. It did not cause any problems. I just had to show both passports when I left.

Once you have your mew passport, go to the immigration office that issued your last retirement extension and ask them to transfer the extension stamp into your new passport. It takes a lot of rubber stamps, but it's free.

Your 90 day report date is not affected by the change to the new passport.

Not sure what the Australian rules are for renewing a passport, but for the UK if you renew a passport within 9 months of the old one expiring, your new passport will be valid from when it's issued until 10 years after the old passport expiry date.

^^ Exactly as C in P said.  You'll lose three pages of the new passport with the transfer stamps, but it's a painless process.
