MAX ON TRAVELERS CHEQUES?

I wanted to bring AMERICAN EXPRESS TRAVELERS CHEQUES in $500.00 denominations. Is it any problem cashing them in the currency exchange booths like the one on Beach Road/Soi 3? I have cashed the $100.00 ones there before.

I doubt it as long as they are yours and you have ID. I normally take £100 ones.

Where did you get them from? It is my understanding that Amex does not issue $500 TCs anymore. Visa still issues them, but they are not widely accepted due to fear of counterfeiting.

So you actually have them? I'm asking because none of the banks or credit unions in my area carry any over $100. My main credit union doesn't even carry the $20 checks for one anymore either, only the $50 and $100 TCs.

Let us know if you get them. BTW the link you posted is to the AMEX merchants site, not the consumer site. The merchants site shows they're available, but actually getting them at a bank might be a different story.

If you can prove money is yours then you can take in to Thailand as much as you want.

Not true, one year I brought Amex TC's went to a bank, signed 10 x $100 in front of cashier, gave drivers license and Passport, she looked, took to manager, she looked then brought them back and refused to cash them as "signature not same same" top and bottom. Well when I originally signed 50 of them I got writers cramp these last 10 I did not. Signature was similar but not same same. I ended up having to take them back to US to get refund from my bank because you are supposed to sign in front of cashier and I couldn't erase my signature.

I had a similar problem when I went...although they ended up accepting them. I had just flown in and was REALLY anxious to get over to patts as it was quite late already...so I signed them all really fast. They were about to not accept them even though I showed them both my passport airline ticket and was about to unload my wallet on there desk when the girl just said sign them all again "make same like before".

Seems we are getting a bit off subject here. It's not about how much you can "bring in", the question was how large a denomination they will cash at the exchange booth. So yes while there is no limit on what you can bring in, you should have the person watch you countersign and sign them as you normally would.Having larger denominations means less signing and less writers cramp and chance that the signatures wont match. Along with less paperwork.

However, you can't leave with more than 50,000 baht per person unless you have special authorization (this exact amount seems to change from time to time). You can carry out any amount of foreign currency, but there are restrictions at banks on how much Thai baht you can convert into foreign currency at one time, and for large amounts you will need to show your airplane ticket and passport, and maybe provide an explanation for very large amounts. (These restrictions are mainly the result of currency speculation surrounding the 1997 currency crisis, and again in 2007 due to "capital controls" which were discontinued in 2008. As of early 2008, no problem.)

I was in Pattaya in July and August and I had no problem cashing $500usd TC in exchange in front of Lek hotel. I only changed my money there since I was staying at the Lek and it was convenient.

 

I would have brought more $500 TC but my bank at home thought that it might be a problem cashing them. Next time I will bring more, like I said I had no problem

Ok my bank just called and they have my $500.00 denominated American Express Travelers Cheques ready to pick up.
