Anyone know what this small Thai word means?

Hi,

I see a small Thai word a lady writes to me that has a repeat sign after it 2 or 3 times.

But I'm buggerd if I know what she means! Well, I think just maybe I have an idea....but there again - maybe not!

I can read some simpler Thai scrip if I'm aware of the general thrust of it in English before hand...but I'm stumped with this word she sometimes puts at the end of a sentance.

Just 4 letters - Sala Ay, Hor Heap, (above the text) mahunagan, Orr Arn.

Just those 4 but though I've scanned different websites...I still need help.

Cheers in advance.

Do you mean เห้อๆๆ ?

It's the sound of laughing, just like 555, but just not as loud, more like huh huh huh

Thais have a lot of different ways to write laughing sounds, with different meanings too:

Right, so that's what it means!

You're a top man slick67!

That's just how she puts it too.

I had some inkling that she was making a joke somehow but didn't think it was quite laughing.

Yes, it makes sense ....well now it does. :)

Many thanks as I couldn't find any info about it.

Cheers!

I've always thought of it in the same way we use 'huh', almost like a question word.

It's a strange one. The example that Slick67 gives is missing the 'Mai tho' present in the spelling given by the OP but it is repeated so it could just be an alternative spelling. With the 'Mai Tho' which alters the tone it's usually just like our 'huh'

Hi Dr!

Not seen you around for a while.

Yes that fits in perfectly with the subject of conversation...so I now know she wasn't referring to the contents of my pants then! 555 (chance would be a fine thing too!)

But it was starting to get at me a little....Well ok quite a lot actually!

That bloody 'Orr-Arn' gets me sometimes when used in conjunction with another vowel, as the sound can be so different from the letters written down.

I'm going to try & learn to read Thai once & for flippin all!

Cheers

Sounds like you have a pretty functional grasp already.

Hi again!

In her messages there is never the 'Mai Tho' above.

She is a teacher studying to become a lecturer in a Uni...so I'll give her benefit of the doubt that she knows how to spell correctly! :)

But would I ever love to pick up upon a mistake! (wouldn't we all?)

Well in that case it looks like she meant ha ha rather than huh huh lol. Where'd the mystery Mao tho come from?

Well...No, not really Dr.

That is, I once did have, but that was in the early 90's learnt on Sunday mornings at the big Thai temple in Wimbledon, London.

There were lessons for anyone who cared to turn up & put 50p in the coffee jar.

I got an hour a week & had that famous (well used to be years back) black Thai language book that I often read.

Wifey didn't really want me knowing too mut either, so over the years it got forgotten.

At the front of the big house there was a room where a chain smoking, small Thai man taught & his name was 'An-An' he was a journalist for many years.

He wrote something once that upset the powers that be in LoS & had to get out.

He died only a few years back & his remains were allowed back to be buried in his village Wat.

Such a nice guy he was that if he taught you you'd never forget him.

That was the guy. If the weather was good we used to sit on the low wall just outside the house. I couldn't remember his name, what I do remember was asking him if he was from Phaak Eesarn but actually asking if he was from Pakistan? I remember him telling us about his past so it was the same guy. My Thai must have been shit back then!
