Jai Lai...

Recommended Posts

My TGF calls me jao choo (which I know means butterfly), but she also says "jai lai"

I know jai means heart, but can someone tell me what jai lai means? (I don't want to ask her).

Cheers, I thought it might mean bad heart but she is only saying it in jest.

You know, google wasn't my friend in this case - turned up jack shit.

Thanks anyway.

no probs

Thai girls tend to overdramatise in my opinion.

"Lai" is Lao language or Issan language for more or big.

Means the same as "Mak" so  Big or More.

So Jai Lai ,means the same as Jai Mak

Big Heart.

Be careful when hearing Thai and thinking what you think already.

Many arguments have been started this way.

For Fark all.

By the way this should be pronounced as JAOWJOO.

Nothing to do with what you're talking about.

Jai Lai is not complimentary, it does not mean big heart, that is for sure.

but to avoid 1 of those "many arguments" referred to, why don't you just call some Thai girls by that, and see how they react.

In Lao language?

"jai lai" is said about someone who is mean, cruel.

your "lai" in Lao probably uses a different tone anyway.

Thai and Isan girls will often say jai dam for cruel or nasty. Lai in Isan is the same as the Thai mak.

Where is your girl from? If she is from Isan it is pretty unlikely she is say jai lai to mean cruel or nasty. Good example is Isan girls say something is very delicious by saying zab (seap) lai rather than aroi mak as Thai girls would.

The correct meaning is that your heart melts like ice, you're falling in love etc...

No, that's different. She's calling him mean or cruel, not telling him her heart is melting.

No, that's different. She's calling him mean or cruel, not telling him her heart is melting.

Because I've readed "my TGF" and only "jai lai"

- If "lai" = rising tone => bad heard

- If "lai" = tone down => I feel for you

Yes, as above it means cruel... "lai" and is indeed said with rising tone.  And she is speaking Thai, not Isaan/Lao.

Thanks guys, you certainly know what you are talking about, except for Taeng Mo.

  • 4 weeks later...

I'm late to the party but wanted to add that calling you jao chuu isn't really nice way of calling you a butterfly, it's technically a guy who sleeps with married women. jao = a guy, chuu = someone who pokes married women, you're the original Don Juan! 555+
