Blocking / Locking a phone based on its IMEI number

Recommended Posts

My GF had her 5 week old phone stolen recently. In the UK a phone can be blocked based on its IMEI number. Anybody know if it can be done in Thailand?

Yes it can. I don't have the instructions in front of me as I'm at the office, but I'll update when I find it.

Thanks Chuck, I would appreciate that.

Thanks mate. She has cheered up now but it has cost me a new phone for her.

The answer is actually yes and no.

Yes, if you have the IMEI number you can get it network blocked.

Now for the bad news. Unfortunately you can re-program IMEI numbers. All you need is the right software and cabling and the number can be changed. I believe that places in Tukcom provide the service.

Hi, I used to work in telecoms, but my info is a couple of years out of date, although i haven't heard any different from colleagues who still work in the industry.

If its a UK phone that was bought with UK network branding/subsidy, it can be IMEI barred by the network.

But here is the bad news.... the IMEI blacklist was only shared with other UK mobile phone operators. So stolen phones on the blacklist can be exported abroad and work..

Not sure the what the policy for the networks are in thailand, as all the networks have to come with some sort of agreement regarding blacklisted numbers. And it doesn't stop the phone from being used in other countries networks.

Thanks for all your replies. If as Shuggy says the IMEI number can be reprogrammed then there is little point in having it blocked (even if it is possible in Thailand)
