Thai internet laws

Sorry if im posting in the wrong forum.

I know porn and gambling is forbidden in Thailand. But do they monitor the internet traffic? They need some quite high tech equipment to do that, and i doubt they have it.

Gambling

If i place some bets or play poker on a european web sites, is there any chance that traffic is monitored? Is it still illegal to just check the odds/visit the site without playing? If it is will i get a warning, get a fine, deported or what will happen?

Porn

Is it safe to look at porn? Like youporn.com or just browsing this site. Is it wise to turn off the browser cache?

P2P

Downloading movies, tv shows, music etc via bittorrent? Is this safe to do?

Gambling - Not a major issue with logging on in LOS and placing bets unless internet cafe has blocking software, however, if caught I would imagine deportation would be a minimum.

Porn - A bit more straight forward in that blocks are put on all forms of suspect material with even harmless soft videos on "youTUBE" being blocked so "youporn" will never get through.

GLASGOW RANGERS FOOTBALL CLUB - NO OTHER TEAM COMES CLOSE!!!!!!!

With some Euro gambling sites they will suspend your account if you log in from a location that is not legal. Happened to a friend of mine and it took him 6 months, a lawyer and lot of hassle to get his money out of the site.

There are ways around this but they tend to be self defeating and the risk of being ratted out by a bargirl or someone else still remains.

I know nothing about it but I have seen a guy in the Butchers Arms SOi Bukao lumping on laying bets all ovwer the place on some site, that was last October though.

Some sites work just fine and will take bets from any location.

Like I said there are ways around the ones that track and take action on IP's too so anything is possible.

The answers below are not meant to sound condescending, but .....

Not taking a pause from gambling while on holiday sounds a bit like an addiction (to me).

You should not have to watch that on the screen while in LOS.

Will you have time to this?

Thanks for the answers. I rent a condo and have my own adsl connection.

The only blocks i have seen so far is on youtube.

I doubt the government is reading all the internet traffic and looking for porn of gambling data to bust people instead of just blocking the websites. It would be really weird. Its not like the local cops can do it but more like some intelligence agency have to do it.

I guess you never know though, I have an encrypted socks proxy i can use in Sweden, maybe it would best to use it.

It's worth remembering that some gambling sites are self policing and quite strict. Proxy log in's are the answer but it tends to slow the connection down. Hence in some cases making the whole exercise self defeating.

  • 3 weeks later...

1. why bother gambling mate? Your on your holiday :P Why not gamble with bare back or not :)

2. Porn ..... seriously? Just head to wet and cold agogo, its wild in there LOL joking apart, if you need to look at porn in LOS .... well need i say more

3. Movies, just buy a cheap DVD player (about 600B) from big c and copy DVD's?

The thing is and we have crossed this before, ur in someone else's country and you should really respect their customs and laws mate :)

Wha's like us?

I sometimes (well often) check pattaya addicts when in LOS.

Having a look at the "sexy girls uncut" section may be dangerous, I think I should stop that.... :)

.................................... :P .........

Well, maybe you have to be more careful on your own adsl connection, but from an internet cafe there is no way porn sites are blocked, there is just so many! Not that I watch porn when in thailand, but indeed just going on this site would already be considered as illegal :)

I am just carefull to not do it in the face of the internet shop thai owner, and erase history and recorded passwords. No full protection (keyloggers can run in the background, or packets can be monitored), but no need to be paranoiac.

I am much more carefull when doing money payment (giving my visa number). For this I use my own laptop as much as possible. given that all the payment pages are securized by encryption, I think that using my laptop in an internet cafe is safe enough.

Never had troubles anyway, the only trouble was a visa number copied from a shop, not on internet...

But I agree, you need to be a REAL pervert if watching porn is still important when u are in LOS ;-P

It sound to me that he is going to live there for a while and not just a 2 weeks vacation so I don't understand why you complaining about what he wants to do on the internet.

Regarding the questions. I dont know if u wants to play poker or do betting, but i know that several poker networks are "blocked" but a few works (the poker client) but its more usual that the website is blocked, so i guess u have to try out which of your favourite sites are working.

You can send me a pm in swedish if u like, and i can tell u what i know working and not.

did you just bet or play poker too? I heard Betfair were one of the more stricter 'self policing' sites.

just had a bet head not clear enough to play poker.
