I took my open water dive course in Pattaya through Aquanauts Dive Centre and the course was great. The diving in the area was OK but I found the diving around Koh Samui and Koh Tao to be far superioir.

 

Aquanauts is conveniently located on Soi 6 as well, so after a day of diving in the water you can easily stop for some relaxation at the end of the day. :Dance:

I went diving in Pattaya in 1987 and it was pretty devoid of sea life back then. I do have one picture of a sea turtle we saw. Unless things have changed drastically since then there are better spots. I have always heard that a group of islands not too far from Phuket are a good spot. I can't remember the name of the islands tho.

The Similan Islands off Phuket are far and away the best diving in Thailand.Diving anywhere in the Gulf of Siam is very ordinary.

I had a few dive trips in the mid 90's, mostly saw dead coral and a few reef fish,

went fishing with a few guys in August last year and one of them told me he had done some diving recently and the dive sites had improved a lot.

Tighter controls now and less poaching and explosives used when fishing probably has improved things

There's no doubt that the diving in Pattaya, compared to what is offered off Phuket, is pretty average, but it does allow you to have a daytime diversion.

 

Some of the best diving would be the outer islands where visibility and marine life is noticeably better. Also, there are now a number of wreck dives available to those with suitable certification:

I've dived the Hardeep a number of times and it has been a very good dive with nice coral growth and marine life. A word of caution though that this wreck does experience strong currents during the descent and ascent but once on the wreck, the wreck it's shields you from the currents.
