exporting from thailand

my wife need a new bike and im thinking of buying one when im in thailand

does anyone no the cost of shipping it to england .

and also the paper work involved once i get it here

is it worth the bother ?

I'm guessing just the import tax alone will make it too expensive, not even counting the shipping. I don't know about England, but if you import a motor vehicle into the US it also has to comply with all safety and emissions laws.

Before importing you may want to check if the bike meets UK/EU standards on safety, emissions and other things.

Bikes come in a flat pack and are assembled at the store, just tell them you want it unassembled and take it on the flight, you will have to send it through oversized luggage the same as golfers, surfers etc do with their kit.

However...... I've never seen a decent bike in Thailand (girls excluded).

Not worth the hassle of importing it, new in the UK for less than £1000 or second hand moped for much less on Ebay

Depends what you are looking for, I just bought my daughter a moped for less than a grand in the UK.

You do need to put it together a bit and allow about £100 for licences and tax

Last year I imported a Toyota Hilux pick-up from Thailand. Made great savings compared to buying in the UK. It is a long and tiresome process. I bought from an company in Bangkok and they organised the shipping. There is quite a bit of paper work involved such as customs clearance etc. When the vehicle arrives it must be tested so that it complies with EU safety standards (SVA Test). When the SVA is completed it is necessary to fill out endless forms to have it registered and taxed.

 

It should be noted that if anything should go wrong with the vehicle you have are left to deal with the problems yourself. An agent selling the same vehicles in the UK will not want to help as you have not bought from them.

I can see it being worth the hassle for an expensive item like a pickup, but for something as cheap as a small bike, the max saving would be about £500, is it worth all the problems for such a small wad of cash?
