Visa Credit Card Warning - Copied in LOS

nightlyf

Recommended Posts

I just got a call from my bank asking if i had lent out my visa credit card to anyone in China.

I told her NO. She informed me my card had just been swiped through at IKEA in Shenzhen Cina for $593 USD.

She then asked me all these other questions which included " Have you visited asia recently"

Well i was in Thailand during April and used my C/C a total of 6 times.

Twice at Pavilion Place hotel in BKK ( never stay here, it is a filthy hole and i got eatin alive by bed bugs )

Once at Secrets hotel Pattaya to pay for my stay.

And 3 x at ATM machine's in BKK around the Patpong area.

She told me that C/C fraud is common in Thailand and next time to be very careful.

She also said i am not liable for this expense which is a good thing.

So addicts be very wary when using your C/C in LOS

Of course this card could have been copied in Australia, by chances are higher it was in LOS.

Good to know your bank was on top of things.

Sorry to hear it happened to you. It is far too common. But you can avoid it by following a simple rule - never, ever use your CC for anything other than cash withdrawls from bank ATMs. And when you do that, cover your card and the screen. Any time you hand your card to someone else, there is the potential for them to copy it. It happens in even the most reputable hotels and shops.

i got my card cloned when in bangkok in june,i had left the country so there was no chance of it being me that use it,it was a cast withdraw, thing that made it was worst it was my debit card, bank refused to pay me the money back, after a number of complaints they refunded the money,i will never use my debit card again after the way the bank were,i will use a credit card so if anything going wrong its there money not mine, when my debit card was hit they really did not want to talk to me and sent me a letter saying its my fault,

Guys

Had a similar issue when I was in Bangkok (only place I used the card was at 2 restaurants and hotel), got the call from my bank 2 months later.

Where are you now, have you lent any one your card etc, as someone was trying to use it in Philippines.

Transaction was stopped, so happy I had fraud protection on card.

I always try and use cash in Pattaya for a variety of reasons, tracking being number one.

But I have another CC with a small credit limit just in case someone try's to rip it off.

Cash is still king out here; besides, some places make a small charge for using a CC.

Be scene and not herd.

Although i have three CC, i will be taking cash only for my up and coming trip to LOS, i only ever use my CC for those emergencies only, as someone has just stated CASH IS KING....

Also let your bank know when you are traveling and they will be especially vigilant in looking for fraud. I let them know where I am going, a number to contact me and to call me if they get any single transaction over $500.

My card got cloned once in BKK. I only used it twice, at my hotel (a reputable one), and an establishment I wont name because there is no proof and therefore I dont want to slander them. Several charges totalling a few thousand US within a couple of hours. My visa card notified me immediately and I didnt have to pay anything, as I clearly wasn't in Thailand to make the charges.

Now when I get home I just call and cancel it, and get a new one issued.

My visa debit card was cloned, not sure where as I hardly ever use it but think the guy at phones 4u might have done it..anyway got a call from mthe bank asking if I was in singapore to which I replied Ive never fucking been there..transaction stopped and my money was safe..

Every action has an equal and opposite reaction - "it was just the internet.." is not an excuse.

I had £3k taken from my debit account two months after coming back from LOS. When I tried to pay for things on my debit card and it kept getting declined and my balance looked like I hadn't been paid that month. Anyway, someone had used my card in Australia, a place I have never been. The cheeky feckers started with small transactions and gradually built it up in one day but were stopped when they tried to put a £2k transaction through in one go. It took a while but I received all the money back.

The only time I used my debit card in LOS was to withdraw money from ATM and currency booths and I thought I was being careful.

Hmmm.. think I'll leave my Visa debit card at home. I hate carrying large amounts of cash though.. guess I need to stuff it down my trainers.

Hi,

I have also had trouble with cloning in the past.

I have setup seperate Nationwide accounts.

One flex account with a debit card and an e-save internet account.

I get a friend in the UK to transfer money from the e-save via the net when i need money.

I only keep a small amount in the flex account so if it is cloned i don't lose anything.

The rate out of the ATM is higher than from the street but some banks in Thailand add a small charge.

I need a debit card for the hotels they insist on swiping the card when i checkin.

Will they ever impliment chip and pin in Thailand?

Thanks for the tip forwarned is forearmed suggest regulars open thai bank a/c , it is very easy and very quick, don't forget to take passport . Alternatively only use in atm's less chncece of fraud and tell your bank where you will be using before you leave.

When you use an ATM, particularly an outdoor one, check carefully to make sure it doesn't have a pre-scanner attached to the front of the machine. They're made to blend in with the machine and copy your magstripe data as it passes it through to the machine, where your transaction continues normally.

They also mount a flyer holder with a camera in it to record your pin number.

Here's the link to snopes that has photographs and verifies what I'm talking about. I remember a while back it was posted in a Philippines forum that someone had seen one on or near Fields and there were reports of them in the states as well. I would be suprised if it's never been done in Thailand.
