Fr. Ray's Foundation and Pattaya Orphanage Trust

I've donated toward both organizations and Dirty Disco and I even visited Fr. Ray's orphanage. The more I've read though, it seems Fr. Ray's Foundation and the Pattaya Orphanage Trust have been at odds with one another. Does anyone have personal knowledge and experience (i.e. beyond just what you've heard or read) with these charities? If so, what's your objective impression? I want to help the less fortunate in Pattaya, but want to do so prudently. Thanks!

Yes I can help, The orphanage use to be part of the Fr ray foundation until recently, now it is an independent organisation , The Fr ray foundation now consists of the Muyat Thai school which teaches English and computer studies to disabled young adults. It then tries to place then in a government scheme to find work, most of the workers at the school are ex students.

it also has an old folks home, for Thais and other displaced persons.

The drop in centre for street kids, which offers shelter, food and some basic educations for street kids who have run away from home or have no home or are escaping from domestic violence and from child prostitution. One example is a young 4 year old boy who was bulled by some so called hard case and was hung over a fire by his feet burning all his scalp, ( hes getting better now, and his hair has grown back )

The school for the blind. which teaches then English, braille, and offers support for blind children as young as 4 years up to adults in their 30s

now in the progress of building a new vocational school for the blind.

The street kids school. in the north of town is for those kids who came from the drop in centre and have shown a commitment to get away from the street life and study, the school gives them rooms and board and of course an educations. plus teaches them sports and project like a farming. it has given then some land where they learn to grow your own food.

they also take the kids from all the schools and old folks to the beach twice a week.

I was at the orphanage two weeks and all seems as before. Both are doing some great work and are both worthy causes. I think the break was something to do with the legal aspect of adopting orphaans and so the a goverment took some control away from the foundation as it is a charitable organisation. but dont quote me on that.

PS i was a volunteer there.

Thanks for the thorough insight. Were you volunteering two weeks ago? I'm looking for ways to help. It felt good to donate goods and money, but I'd really like to be more hands on.

Without wanting to detract from their good work if you donate to the "trust" your money might go elsewhere as they also support other projects.

Also like all charities they have expenses which are deducted from donations.

If you want to support ONLY the fr Rey Foundation you need to contribute direct.

I'll only be in town for about 2 weeks, but would still like to help out somehow. If you could PM me with any further info, I'd greatly appreciate it. Anything you could post here would be great too. Other BM's may find it useful. Thanks!
