Spring Rolls? ...or food with lots of vegetables

Hi chaps

Just about to embark on an extended stay in pattaya. Like to do a bit of my own cooking, but I fall short on the vegetables!

I know the deep fried ones taste great, but I want the healthier fresh ones that are steamed or maybe raw. Can i get them in thailand? and if so, can you recommend where (a market would be ideal)? are they usually ready to eat or do i have to cook them myself? rough cost too please.

Any other suggestions for healthy vegetable dense food/meals, greatly appreciated (I know the soups can be good for this).

cheers

The way I get vegetables down me is to juice them you don't get more denser than that. ( not the carton stuff)  Basement of central festival centre has a juice bar. Couple of apples and carrots lovely. Also you will find street stalls selling freshly squeezed orange juice another great option.

"Fat sick and nearly dead" is a great documentary that explains the benefit of juicing just google it

Tues/Friday market on Soi Bukhaow has vegy/fruit stalls.

Pattaya South Rd near Tukom has loads of daily fruit/veg stalls.......and an offstreet meat market......though not for the squeamish!

The big supermarkets on South and on Central have fruit/vegy sections but I would guess these are more expensive than the markets.

In the car park behind Mikes Mall are a row of fruit stalls which years ago were cheap......now all the signs there are in Russian and I'm guessing the prices have risen.

thanks.

I'm familiar with the supermarkets, but most of the vegies in there, I just didn't know what they were or how to cook them! lots of green stalky/leafy ones i've never seen before. Maybe someone could lend me their TGF for an hour or so, for a shopping trip  :WinkGrin1:

I know the tukcom stalls are popular - has anyone spotted those spring rolls? or something similar. Deep fried ones are available everywhere, but i just don't recall seeing a healthier version.

Porn's Vietnamese Food on 3rd Road, does the best fresh spring rolls in Pattaya IMO.

I thought that might be the only solution ...find a vietnamese restaurant! Maybe i can buy in bulk and take-away. surprised that they're not readily available elsewhere.

TTT i'm just not into the juicing. I want a solid food, rather than Liquid. Also, juicing can remove fibre from vegies, which is not ideal. plus not practical to get it everyday and costly if doing it for a 74 day trip. I eat about 500g a day of veg.

why can't they just sell bags of frozen veg! 50 baht a kg in the uk

No problem with carry outs from Porns, I do it all the time.

Yes its pricey, but all the supermarkets sell bags of frozen veg.

I'll find that porns on 3rd road .....don't tell me where, I like a good walk!

Did a fair bit of shopping in tesco and big C and don't recall seeing frozen veg. Freezer sections in thailand are so small, but i don't recall seeing veg. Need to look harder - thanks

some of the markets have fresh cooked vegies, don't ask me where and not the stuff floating in broth or in bags already

i buy cabbage, cauliflower, string beans, zucchini and some of the dark green leafy stuff, enough for 2 meals 20 baht.

no sauce, no salt nothing, I just drown it in fresh squeezed lemon juice, not quite downing a maccas but

power food at its best!

To learn what the veggies are and how to cook them you need a TG with you for a few days to have a look around the markets.......

Sat with a BF in a bar lots of times and a cart starts cooking up outside. I always ask her 'what's cooking?'.......if it looks good I give the TG some money and she gets it for me......that's the way to learn about Thai cooking. If it doesn't taste good there's always plenty of BG's around to finish it off.

The best veggie cart food I had was a bunch of green leaves.....I'm pretty sure it was Thai basil......and some rice mixture. My BF showed me how to put some rice mixture in the leaf with some chilli sauce, wrap it, then eat. Fucking gorgous. Been hand fed by your BF.....fucking excellent!

Porns, is on 3rd Road a little north of the Pattaya Glang Junction.

Problem is that the Tescos and BigC's are very Thai-centric.

Try, Foodland on Pattaya Glang, or Friendship on Pattaya Tai.

Yeh need a local to show me ...i'll start with the soup places that have the vegies on the tables and find a friendly face to ask

Learn a few Thai dishes is the obvious way to go.

Pat kanaa moo grawp (loaded with great vegetables, kale like, with lovely, lovely crunchy pork)

Pat pak ruam mit (stir fried mixed vegetables)

Soooooooooo many more great Thai dishes with tons o' vegetables, cheap as chips, healthy as a horse (but I can't be arsed to remember them). All other advice on this thread is now obsolete. :D

For home cooking, stir fries are great . You control the amount of oil and type. Use canola or olive oil.

The grocery stores sell packaged stir fry packs. Just add some meat.

When eating out cashew nut chicken has lots of vegetables.
