Depends on your budget and time - I prefer taxi since I am usually on short Yank holiday. The airport website has good transport info for bus schedules. I guess soon there will be a train into downtown - but that is a ways off yet.

There is a free schuttle bus from the airport in BKK to the bus station. A bus from there to Patts will cost you around 120 THB and takes aprox 2 hours to get to Patts bus station. A taxi will get you there somewhat quicker for around 1200.
