Buying Windows/Cd's/DVD's in LOS

I was wondering if anyone has ever bought software (i.e. Windows) in Thailand and brought it back home with them?

I don't mean the legal stuff..

 

I can image a lot of imitation stuff being sold in stores and on the streets..What's your experience buying such disks? Is it highly likely it won't work putting it in your pc back home again? A friend of mine bought some fake CD's, most did work well, some didn't.What are you guys' experiences? If it's ALL crap I won't even bother looking for it..

most will work fine but sometimes the actually quality of the discs used is questionable! the way the discs are burnt arent always readable

The problem is that they burn the copies at max speed when using cheap discs, which results in read errors on most. They should really be burned at 24x or lower.

In any case, the discs most likely will not be readable after a few years so it pays to make a back-up disc image on your hard drive asap.

The software disc I purchased last Nov worked fine and the keygen included with it made things very easy.

I've bought quite a bit... some works, some doesnt. However, I would bother buying XP/Vista in LOS i'd rather get my own registered version.

I bought 1k photo chip for a sony camera in MBK, its clearly a copy and is faulty but it was 15% of the cost.

 

I read somehwere one guy took his laptyopn in someone swithced his memery 1 meg done to 256 or something, unless you are areal expert an I am not i would steer clear.

I have bought many in Thailand. Almost all work, and i install them on my laptop immediately after I purchase them. The ones that do not install, I take back for a exchange, but almost all oft he times it is my error, not the disk.

 

Be careful, however bringing them back to the U.S. however. U.S. customs will seize them if found. You can upload them to a server or take other precautions to insure that this does not happen.

I download all my copies these days - with a 1.5Mbs connection there's no point in having a dog and barking yourself.

Learn how to download using torrents and you get all this stuff yourself for free.

You can also check the quality yourself , normally the site your downloading off will have comments re quality , movie and game downloads have special sites that rate the quality of the ripped disk.

For a popoluar movie up to a dozen diferent hacker groups could of made a copy with one groups copy perfect to the worst copy going around not working.

 

You can check all this from your PC , rahter than going to LOS buying it and waiting to get home to find out it doesnt work.

 

The People in LOS are getting these cracked versions from the same spots as you or i can get them.

I find that I'm using rapidshare more and more these days for downloading - torrents in LOS are down to a crawl during the day unless you pay for a premium connection, in which case it would be cheaper just to buy the damn thing in the long run!

I get most stuff from rapidfind, and find I can usually download at max speed. It's time consuming doing it in 100Mb chunks, but it gets the job done in hours rather than days.

i have got a lot of stuff in the past and so have mates from pantec in bkk-- most of it is good,some contain viruses<,,,,, beware (if it has a virus it is an old one so any good up to date protection you have will kill it). but its all cheap as.. worth the risk i reckon...

never had much trouble with it really.

when you use torrent and similar things you may end up with a virus or something that you cant fix because it is a "new" one. so i would think about that if i where you .........

some offf the guys here would know a lot about this and will add more im sure ... ps if you go to los your up for adventure and risk anyway. ..

I find most of the software I buy from Tukcom Pattaya or Bangkok contain virus or trojan and normally always in the keygen.

A decent AV will block you from opening the keygen anyway.

You can disable the AV so you can run the keygen and hope the AV will remove it or copy the cd to HDD then run av to remove the virus as,obviously,you cannot remove a virus if its on a cd.

 

Because of all of this,I now tend towards free and open source stuff and have even contemplated actually buying legit software but to date have not taken this drastic step.

I now buy my Windows, Vista, and Suites, from the same shop over

in Tecom upstairs.

 

Before, I use to take my labtop with me, but since they all know me now,

I just take it with me. Occasionally I have issues, not sure if it on my end, computer,

or software is bad, but have never had issues returning it for a replacement.

 

If you are new to this, I would probably take a labtop with you and test it on the spot.

 

Also, fyi, I believe the cost is cheaper over at Tecom in Pattaya then over in BKK especially

at BKK version of Tecom...having a mental lapse and cant remember the name.

I seem to find all sorts of software and games a lot cheaper in Pattaya than in BKK.

pantip in chang mai is not very good

plenty of covers in books to look at

about 100 baht a cd

not tried it myself yet

buy a few

found tesco lotus and big c had cheap cds,vcds
