Teachers On Tuk â€“ Tuk World Tour To Promote Education

Two UK teachers on a world tour promoting education have overtaken the record for the longest journey made in a tuk-tuk.

November 25,2013; Richard Sears and Nick Gough have travelled 37,500 kilometres and passed through 37 countries, supporting grassroots education projects in Africa, Asia and South America.

They passed the current record for a tuk-tuk journey of 37,410km, set by Germans Susi Bemsel and Daniel Snaider in 2005, while crossing Northern Peru.

The pair, who left London in August, have tackled deserts, negotiated jungles and survived encounters with elephants as well as an accident in Malaysia when a truck ploughed into the back of their tuk-tuk.

“Although there have been many testing times, we have been privileged to experience such wonderful places and meet some truly remarkable individuals,” Mr Gough said.

As part of their adventure the pair set up the Tuk Tuk Educational Trust charity to raise funds for education projects highlighted via short films being made during the expedition.

They are also raising awareness for the Global Campaign for Education and talking at schools and universities to engage students in debate surrounding the role of education.

Their choice of transport was designed to take advantage of its slow-paced, open and friendly nature to explore and unlock different cultures and communities and learn about and from their values, struggles, inspirations and ambitions.

When their tuk-tuk broke down, not for the first time and just 70 kilometres short of the current world record mark, the pair had to push the 800-kilogram vehicle for three days to make up the distance.

Having had their tuk-tuk fixed in Chepen, Peru, Mr Sears and Mr Gough are back on the road and hoping to become the first people to drive a tuk-tuk around the world.
