Renting big bike -> insurance

Recommended Posts

Renting a big bike is not without risk in Pattaya. Especially if you aren't used to driving on the left side of the road. Therefore I would like to rent a big bike with decent insurance (preferably with 2d class: that's 3rd party damage, bail if jailed, theft). My health is complety covered already (therefore no 1st class needed).

Questions:

1) Anyone know a renting place where such services are provided?

2) Would it be possible to insure a hired motorcyle yourself?  Which company?

Any help/experience would be much appriciated.

Ofcourse I have a big bike drivers licence and a International drivers licence.

"Why are farangs so stupid?" she asked and I had no answer to that.

You might contact AXA insurance and see if they will do this.

I agree with others ,i am not a big fan of renting big bikes even if exp,two many tourists die on these

things by there own fault OR as we know the thais pull out of a soi then look or dont, scooters the way to go

If its travel insurance then i would be surprised if you are covered for any bike over 125cc .

I can understand why you would want to have a big bike here if you are used to them at home, but believe me around town they are uncomfortable and pretty useless.

Many rental contracts have a clause that you cannot take more than a certain distance from pattaya, which kind of defeats the purpose of having a road rocket..

I have rented big bikes in pattaya before waste of time hardly ever got out of

second gear , if going to other areas maybe but some companys will not let

you take out of the area .

also the cost to hire big bikes goes up big time , especially the latest models .

I disagree about the safety part. If you are an experienced rider with a level head, it is much safer to have a larger motorcycle, because that affords you a larger tire contact patch, better brakes, and more power on tap to escape a shaky situation.

I emailed an insurance company in Patts (can't remember the name) enquiring about extra insurance for a rented moped, they wouldn't do it.

Maybe he wants to get out of town. I've rented them a couple times to make some runs. No fun to be on big roads with mini-bike. But agree that if you want to stay in Patts/Jomtien area, scooter is all anyone needs.

that only works on main roads , in patts at any traffic lights you will be 200 yards

behind Scooters , bikes are just to big to weave through traffic .

safety not come in to it when you get Thai's driving opposite way up roads and

pavements with no lights on 24/7 , and guess what always farrang fault .

Thank you for all your comments. In response to these comments:

-I totally agree that Scooters are the way to go for 95% of Pattaya tourists, however I want to make

some bigger runs as well

-I have emailed AXE, but they suggested to ask the retailer since he 'owns' the bike,

he has to insure it

-I'm fully covered for personal health injuries with my regular and travel insurance (got a drivers

licence for big bikes ofcourse)

Well, no risk no life ;) I'll go for the crappy 3rd party insurance then...

Try Ducati on 3rd rd mate, fully comp insurance, ask for Tony, i paid 10k deposit and 1800 per day for a monster, if you crash you pay the 1st 20k and anything after that Ducati will cover, come to the scene, deal with police 3rd partys etc.. the bikes are in tip top condition, helps to have big bike travel insurance from your home country too for any cc but they wont cover 3rd party.

Why rent a big bike, when a scooter will do the same job??.

he didnt ask for your worthless 2 cents about what he should or shouldnt rent... keep it to yourself.

to the OP, so far all the big bike rentals ive asked would not provide any insurance.... if you find one that does provide it, please share.

That looks like a very good idea if you want a big bike, any ideas if there are any KTM, BMW or like tourers in or around the area that are doing similar?

Thanks for the info, will investigate / go visit them when I am in town as I want to go on a bit of a road trip. Interested to know if there is any distance from Pattaya restrictions on the rental.

Never seen KTM or BMW out there, think there's a Kawasaki showroom or two, one on Sukhumvit rd not sure if they rent out, apparently this year Ducati got raided by Bib and may have something to do with the Kawasaki lot, hopefully Tony is still there but i think Bangkok Dukes may have taken over, i'll find out in 11 days...

Also i think it's only red plates that cant leave Patts/chonburi or cant drive at night though i maybe wrong

Interesting. So no 3rd party as well? The guy who's gonna rent me the big bike claimed it has 3rd party insurance. But now I'm doubting if it has any insurance at all.

nasty ,he was only adding that too many top blokes die needilsly on pattaya roads for what FROOM FROOM ,if your exp ,up to you ,but if not  too many tourist die and saddened families grieve and orginise to pick up the pieces AND FLY HOME WHATS LEFT

A major problem with the big bike rentals on beach road and the soi's off of it, is the poor maintenance which becomes important when you look at the fact that many of those hiring them have little experience and drive them badly.

Ducati  sounds like the way to go.

Found this site. Their 'insurance' policy sounds like 'we will insure it ourselves instead through an

insurance company'. But will be a second best for anyone wanting to rent on the cheap.

This seems to be Ducati dealer Mingmarmot is talking about, will be my first choice (thx m8t).
