Suicide is not just a normal problem but a global issue; statistics show that every 40 seconds a person commits suicide.

10th September is not just an ordinary day, but it remarks “The World Suicide Prevention Day” stated by the world health organization, because suicide is not the small problem but rather a global issue. The Pattaya Daily News has frequently reported about foreign and local suicides in Pattaya. However, this issue is just not an issue in Pattaya but around the world.

An approximate of 800,000 up to 1,000,000 people commits suicide every year which means about every 40 seconds one person commit suicide. The rates of those that have tried to commit suicide and not died are 10 to 20 times more than those that have died from committing suicide. The rates are also higher than those that have been murdered, died in war on crime or natural disaster. The people that commit suicide are usually in the aged between 15 to 49 years old.

World Health Organization has ranked Thailand as the 58th country in the world for suicidal rate.

The three provinces in Thailand that have the highest suicide rates are Nan at 15.09 per population of thousands people, followed by Ayuthaya at 13.84 per population of thousands people ,and lastly Chiang Rai at 13.33per population thousands of people ,. These statistics have been reported since 2011.

80% of people that commit suicide are due to depression. When a person suffers from depression they feel irritated, annoyed, uncomfortable, lack of interest in the environment and surroundings, reduced appetite, Insomnia, fatigue, loss of memory. These are the main symptoms of depression if a person feels the symptoms for about two weeks then there are at the risk of depression. Psychiatric treatment will be necessary for those suffering depression.

Other factors that could affect suicide are health reasons or economy reasons. Once a person commits suicide it could lead to depression and other family members could also commit suicide.

“World Suicide Prevention Day “will hopefully create awareness and reduce the suicide rate.
