Astonished passengers emerged from Terminal 2 of Phuket International Airport this morning to find themselves almost in the middle of a bomb crisis.

Phuket – July 31,2013; Happily, plenty of officials were on hand to explain to them that this was not the real thing, but a full scale emergency exercise involving the Thai Bomb Squad, firefighters, doctors, nurses and other crisis experts.

Tassaporn Jeasakul and Chitaphol Suntanakul from Airports of Thailand explained that the exercise included the use of a bomb jammer, designed to prevent cellphones or radio being used to detonate bombs of the kind frequently used by terrorists, assassins, political dissidents, and criminals.

A portable high-resolution, three-dimensional X-ray scanner was then be used by an expert wearing a B2.5-million bomb suit, who collected data and images of the bomb’s make-up.

Instead of an attempt being made to defuse the bomb (in fact, three ‘bombs’ – a red smoke bomb and a yellow one, along with a container of liquid), it was then put out of commission using a waterjet disrupter – a high-powered jet of water used to neutralise a wide range of explosives.

Reukarn Tongsrikrai, AoT’s Deputy Director, said, “The aim of the full-scale exercise was to enhance the skills of our staff and also encourage a stronger relationship between these prevention staff and the public.”

To go with the bomb exercise, Bangkok Hospital Phuket practised treating “victims” of a bombing at the airport.
